Relationship between the Sunspot Number and Active Day Fraction: An Application for the Maunder Minimum

V. M. S. Carrasco, J. Llera, A. J. P. Aparicio, M. C. Gallego, J. M. Vaquero

Summary: This study focuses on the long-term solar activity and analyzes it using parameters such as sunspot counting. By fitting the relationship between the active day fraction (ADF) and sunspot number with an exponential function, the sunspot number during the Maunder minimum (MM) is estimated. The results suggest multiple peaks in the solar cycle during the 1650s, 1670s, 1680s, and 1700s, but no clear evidence in the 1660s and 1690s.

M. A. Obregon, M. T. Rodas, A. M. M. Farrona, F. Dominguez-Castro, M. C. Gallego, R. Garcia-Herrera, J. M. Vaquero

Summary: Great advances were made in meteorological science in the late eighteenth century, particularly in the field of marine weather observations. The Malaspina expedition carried out systematic meteorological readings during their journey, which have now been digitized and analyzed for consistency and quality.

The Rivillas flood of 5-6 November 1997 (Badajoz, Spain) revisited: An approach based on Iber plus modelling

Jose Gonzalez-Cao, Diego Fernandez-Novoa, Orlando Garcia-Feal, Jose R. Figueira, Jose M. Vaquero, Ricardo M. Trigo, Moncho Gomez-Gesteira

Summary: This study analyzes the flash flood that occurred in Badajoz, Spain in November 1997 using the numerical code Iber+. The runoff of the river basin was simulated based on precipitation data, providing an accurate representation of the flood event. The simulation results align with field data and eyewitness testimonies. Various scenarios were analyzed, revealing that the blockage of bridges was the main cause of the catastrophic flood.

A student preconception on physical geodesy: the best reference ellipsoid

Jose Manuel Vaquero, Carmen Pro, Javier Vaquero-Martinez

Summary: This note presents a simple exercise to address the common misconception among Geodesy students regarding the best reference ellipsoid. It helps them move away from a purely geometric perspective towards a more physics-based understanding, where the role of Earth's gravity is emphasized.

Rediscovering the observations of solar prominences from 1906 to 1957 recorded at the Madrid Astronomical Observatory

Alejandro Jesus Perez Aparicio, Victor Carrasco, Maria Cruz Gallego, Jose Manuel Vaquero

Summary: The Madrid Astronomical Observatory conducted a solar observation program from 1876 to 1986, recording sunspots and other solar features. By comparing the Madrid prominence series with records from other observatories and solar activity time series, it was found that the Madrid series had the strongest correlation with the Coimbra prominence series, and similar correlations with other solar activity time series.

Reconstruction of daily global solar radiation under all-sky and cloud-free conditions in Badajoz (Spain) since 1929

Javier Montero-Martin, Manuel Anton, Jose Manuel Vaquero, Roberto Roman, Javier Vaquero-Martinez, Alejandro J. P. Aparicio, Arturo Sanchez-Lorenzo

Summary: This study analyzes the long-term temporal variability of global solar radiation in Badajoz, Spain, from 1929 to 2015. The study finds significant linear trends in global horizontal irradiation under all-sky conditions, with periods of positive and negative trends. The trends are also significant in summer for all three subperiods. The study suggests that these trends may be partially related to the changes in aerosol load.

Hemispheric Sunspot Numbers from the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Valencia (1940-1956)

V. M. S. Carrasco, A. J. P. Aparicio, M. C. Gallego, J. M. Vaquero

Summary: In this study, we digitized the hemispheric sunspot number counts recorded by the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Valencia from 1940 to 1956. By comparing with data from other observatories, such as the Madrid Astronomical Observatory, we found similar hemispheric behaviors and calculated the asymmetry index. The results show that the northern hemisphere was predominant during the study period, consistent with previous studies. Rating: 8 points.

Validation of precipitable water vapor estimates from an inexpensive infrared thermometer

Alejandro Jesus Perez Aparicio, Javier Vaquero-Martinez, Maria Cruz Gallego, Manuel Anton, Jose Manuel Vaquero

Summary: This study investigates the potential of low-cost infrared thermometers to estimate the amount of precipitable water in the atmosphere. Calibration is conducted by comparing infrared thermometer readings with ground-based Global Navigation Satellite Systems measurements of precipitable water. The results demonstrate that infrared thermometers, when calibrated and validated, can be an effective tool for characterizing the spatial and temporal variability of water vapor.

Prediction of the Maximum Amplitude of Solar Cycle 25 Using the Ascending Inflection Point

A. J. P. Aparicio, V. M. S. Carrasco, J. M. Vaquero

Summary: In this work, the maximum amplitude of Solar Cycle 25 is predicted using the 13-month smoothed SILSO Sunspot Number (version 2) as a predictor for the slope of the inflection point during the ascending part of the cycle. The predicted value obtained is 131 ± 32. Finally, the result is discussed in the context of the ongoing debate on solar activity prediction and compared with other predictions for Solar Cycle 25 obtained by different methods.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy as a possible therapeutic candidate for sepsis-associated encephalopathy: A novel hypothesis

Sung Eun Lee, Eunjung Park, Ji-yun Kim, HyukHoon Kim

Summary: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a potential therapeutic modality that has been recognized for its favorable mechanisms in various diseases, including sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE). HBOT has neuroprotective effects through its anti-inflammatory and antiapoptotic effects as well as increased tissue oxygenation capacity. However, there are caveats and limitations in applying HBOT in sepsis.
