Summary: This study examined the association between women's empowerment and fertility decision-making in low and middle resource countries. Empowered women were found to have a relatively low ideal number of children, and participation in household decision-making and negative attitude towards wife-beating were associated with having more than their ideal number of children in LMRCs.

Summary: The study found that the implementation of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) policies in Burkina Faso has led to a significant reduction in inequalities in the distribution of public and overall health spending. However, persistent inequalities were observed at higher care levels for both curative and institutional delivery services. Further efforts are needed to overcome remaining barriers to access and enhance equality, especially among the very poor.

Summary: The multinomial distribution is commonly used for modeling categorical data. A study shows that, under certain conditions, the probability of choosing the least costly decision tends to 1 as the sample size approaches infinity, indicating consistency in decision making. The result also demonstrates that the estimator (p) over tilde (n), which is based on the observed frequencies, is a consistent estimator of the parameter p for both finite and countable models. This finding allows for a more general form of consistency for the cost function of a multinomial model.

Summary: The multi-armed bandit (MAB) model is a classical model for studying decision-making in uncertain environments. Players choose from K possible arms of a bandit machine, where each arm returns a random reward from an unknown distribution. The goal is to collect as many rewards as possible. This paper uses statistical physics techniques to analyze the MAB model, providing insights into regret distribution and dynamical behaviors. Results show the emergence of a multimodal regret distribution with large regrets caused by excessive exploitation of sub-optimal arms.

Summary: This study systematically identified and reviewed cost-of-illness (COI) studies and economic evaluations (EEs) of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). The results showed that these inherited heart conditions have a significant societal and economic burden, but current knowledge is limited. Future research should consider a broader range of costs to optimize care for affected patients.

Summary: This paper presents an Australian model for the assessment of the cost-effectiveness of siltuximab for idiopathic Multicentric Castleman Disease (iMCD) in Australia. The model was informed by literature reviews, clinical trial data, and stakeholder input, and estimated an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio of A$84,935 per quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) gained. The results suggest that siltuximab has a 72.1% probability of being cost-effective compared with placebo and best supportive care at a willingness-to-pay threshold of A$100,000 per QALY.

Summary: The cost-effectiveness and cost-utility of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) and treatment as usual (TAU) were assessed in adults with Bipolar disorder (BD) compared to TAU alone. The study found that MBCT + TAU had lower total costs and only significant differences in healthcare costs compared to TAU. Furthermore, MBCT + TAU showed small differences in QALYs and costs, resulting in a dominant incremental cost-utility ratio. Sensitivity analyses confirmed the robustness of the base case analyses.

Summary: The study sought experts' views on the development of a checklist for cost-of-illness (COI) studies. Interviews with 21 experts from 11 countries confirmed the relevance of COI studies in estimating disease burden, identifying cost components, guiding decision making, and providing input for economic evaluations. A lack of standardized critical appraisal tools for COI studies was mentioned, with experts primarily relying on guidelines and checklists for full economic evaluations. Themes discussed during the interviews included the need for a critical appraisal tool, format and practicality, assessing questions, addressing subjectivity, and guidance requirements.

Summary: This study investigated the treatment preferences of adult patients with HS in Europe. The results revealed that effectiveness was the most important attribute, followed by pain reduction, risk of mild adverse events, risk of serious infection, mode of administration, and duration of treatment benefit. Future HS treatments should be designed to offer higher levels of effectiveness and pain improvement without increasing the risk of adverse events.
