Summary: Herpes zoster is a common virus that affects many people, and vaccines for preventing HZ and PHN are important for older adults. Clinical trials and real-world studies have shown that the vaccines are safe and effective in preventing these conditions.

Summary: Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) is responsible for chickenpox/varicella and shingles/herpes zoster (HZ). HZ is more common in older adults and individuals with certain risk factors. The disease has various clinical manifestations and can lead to complications such as postherpetic neuralgia. Early intervention with antiviral medication is crucial. Vaccines are available for prevention, including one suitable for immunocompromised patients.

Summary: The incidence rates of herpes zoster (HZ) have continued to increase in the United States, especially in age groups not recommended for HZ vaccines. Since 2007, there has been a decrease in HZ incidence rates in individuals <= 20 and >60 years old. The proportion of individuals with HZ who developed postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) was higher from 2007 to 2018 compared to 1994 to 2006.

Summary: This study revealed that head and neck cancer patients receiving radiotherapy are at an increased risk of herpes zoster compared to non-radiotherapy patients, while oncological surgery and chemotherapy have no impact on the development of herpes zoster.

Summary: This study found that there is an increased risk of stroke within 30 days following herpes zoster infection, but receiving zoster vaccination can mitigate this risk.

Summary: The blood levels of major antioxidants are lower in patients with herpes zoster, while inflammatory markers are increased. These biomarkers are associated with postherpetic neuralgia and clinical severity, suggesting a potential link with virus reactivation, nerve damage, and persistent pain.

Summary: COVID-19 can present with skin manifestations, including reactivation of herpes zoster. Vaccination may lead to transient lymphocytopenia, similar to that seen in COVID-19 disease. Further evaluation is needed to determine the relationship between COVID-19, COVID vaccines, and herpes zoster.

Summary: The study shows that the incidence and severity of herpes zoster in solid organ transplant recipients are highest after heart and lung transplantation, in older patients, and when CMV prophylaxis is lacking. Major risk factors include age over 50 at transplantation, type of organ transplant, CMV prophylaxis, and type of anti-rejection therapy. Complications such as post-herpetic neuralgia, disseminated disease, and cranial nerve involvement were reported in a significant number of patients.

Summary: Infection with varicella zoster virus can cause either chickenpox or shingles. Two vaccines are available to prevent shingles, with the recombinant vaccine showing higher efficacy than the live vaccine. Safety data from both vaccines indicate mostly local and mild systemic reactions.

Summary: Populations are ageing worldwide, putting pressure on healthcare budgets. Vaccination can help prevent diseases in older adults and promote healthy ageing. Herpes zoster (HZ) and its complications can cause severe pain and health problems. Vaccines to prevent HZ can reduce disease burden, maintain functioning and quality of life, supporting healthy ageing.

Summary: A study in New Zealand assessed the 'real-world' effectiveness of the zoster vaccine live (ZVL) against herpes zoster (HZ) and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). The study found that the vaccine significantly reduced the risk of hospitalisation from HZ and PHN.

Summary: This study conducted a bibliometric analysis to evaluate current publication trends and hotspots in herpes zoster research worldwide. The findings showed that herpes zoster vaccines, molecular mechanisms, and postherpetic neuralgia are the main research focuses. The study also identified the subunit vaccine as a new hotspot in the field. Preventing varicella zoster virus infection is crucial for improving herpes zoster outcomes.
