Summary: Anacardium occidentale L. is a traditional herbal preparation used to treat type 2 diabetes, and its hypoglycemic activity has been tested and validated in vivo using db/db mice. The study found that AoBTHP significantly reduces fasting and non-fasting glycemia, and the presence of alpha- and beta-glucosidase inhibitors, such as gallic acid, may contribute to its hypoglycemic effect.

Summary: Plant-based beverages often lack nutrients, but fermentation can help address this issue. This study investigated the fermentation process and symbiotic potential of kefir and kombucha in cashew nut beverages. Different inocula, including 100% kefir, 50/50% kefir-kombucha mix, and 100% kombucha, were used in the fermentation process. The results showed that the mixed cultures were more efficient in consuming oligosaccharides, and there was no acute toxicity observed in zebrafish. However, the locomotor activity was lower in the mixed and 100% kombucha samples, indicating potential probiotic activity. The sugar content decreased over time in the 50/50% sample. Fermented cashew nut-based beverages offer a healthy alternative with new flavors and textures that can be utilized in cooking and recipe creation.

Summary: This report discusses the enhancement of toughness in amorphous glassy polymers by incorporating a flexible polyester main chain into poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) resins. The graft-type PMMA exhibited higher elongation without compromising modulus compared to PMMA homopolymer and blend PMMA containing a plasticizer. Analysis of the ductile nature of the graft-type PMMA was done through X-ray scattering, scanning electron microscopy observation, and rheological measurement, with investigation into the effects of main chain and graft chain length on tensile properties.

Summary: By optimizing the processing stages of blanching, osmotic, and drying, a dried jelly cashew apple product was successfully produced with enhanced retention of major nutrients and good organoleptic acceptability. The study showed that suitable conditions in each processing stage contributed to higher levels of ascorbic acid content, total phenolic content, and tannin compounds retention, with a product recovery efficiency of 21.45%. The formation of jelly drying cashew apples (JDC) aims to utilize by-products and add value to the cashew industry.

Summary: Poly (2-methacryloyloxyethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride) (PMETAC) and polyacrylamide (PAM) were simultaneously grafted on xanthan gum (XG) to develop a highly branched polyelectrolyte for flocculating kaolin suspension at a lower concentration. The strategically grafted copolymer showed high efficiency in flocculating kaolin suspension at a neutral pH. The settling time and turbidity of the suspension were greatly reduced by the binary grafted copolymer as compared to neat XG and mono-grafted XG.

Summary: The aim of this study was to obtain the necessary data, including macroscopic, micromorphological, chemical, and purity information, to safely use the red and white types of Anacardium occidentale L. stem barks (AoB) as medicinal plants. The red AoB had a brown inner surface, while the white AoB had a dark-brown inner surface. Microscopic analysis revealed that sclereid cells were larger in red AoB compared to white AoB, while calcium oxalate druses and starch grain areas were larger in white AoB. Chromatographic profiling showed the presence of gallic and protocatechuic acids and other phenolic derivatives in both types of AoBs. The condensed tannins were the major secondary metabolites class in the AoBs. The obtained data are crucial for ensuring the quality of AoB as raw material for the pharmaceutical market.

Summary: This study investigates the down-regulation of interaction between tumour-associated macrophages (TAMs) and colorectal cancer cells by nanoparticles (NPs) loaded with retinoic acid (RA) and coated with cholesterol (CHO), in combination with an anti-PD-L1 immune checkpoint inhibitor. The IL-10R/IL-10 axis is shown to overstimulate the STAT3 pathway and downregulate the NF-kappa B signalling pathway, leading to immunosuppression and epithelial-mesenchymal-transition of colorectal cancer. The use of RA-loaded NPs coated with CHO and anti-PD-L1 is found to be more effective in blocking this signalling pathway.

Summary: Copolymers of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm) grafted with Dextran sulfate (DS) hold great potential for drug release, especially in targeted delivery to inflamed regions. Two different ratios of the copolymers were synthesized and confirmed using spectroscopic techniques. These copolymers demonstrated self-organization behavior in aqueous medium at temperatures above 34°C, with sizes smaller than 300 nm and spherical shapes. DS-g-3PNIPAm showed specificity to leukemic cells without affecting normal cell proliferation. Encapsulating and delivering the poorly water-soluble drug MTX using DS-g-3PNIPAm can overcome its severe side effects and improve bioactivity and stability. Among the thermo-responsive copolymers and targeted MTX nanocarriers, the DS-g-PNIPam exhibited the best performance.

Summary: As a promising approach in translational medicine, the decellularization of discarded livers to produce bioscaffolds that support recellularization has potential in overcoming the limitations of conventional liver transplantation. In this study, the researchers investigated the use of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibition to preserve the extracellular matrix (ECM) during liver decellularization. The results demonstrated that the application of an MMP inhibitor significantly improved the preservation of ECM components and mechanical properties of the bioscaffolds, which supported cell viability and function in vitro. The study also confirmed that the MMP inhibition led to the inhibition of MMP2 and MMP9, providing a novel method to enhance ECM preservation during liver decellularization.

Summary: This paper reviewed the primary methods for improving the overall properties of biodegradable zinc stents. It discussed the mechanical properties, degradation behavior, and biocompatibility of various improvement strategies. Alloying was found to be the most common, simple, and effective method for improving mechanical properties. Deformation processing and surface modification further improved the mechanical properties and biological activity of zinc alloys. Meanwhile, structural design could endow stents with special properties. Manufacturing zinc alloys with excellent properties and exploring their interaction mechanism with the human body are areas for future research.
