Summary: Following a study of individuals attending a Fracture Liaison Service, it was found that there was no significant difference in bone active medication initiation rates between patients aged 80 years and older compared to those aged 50-79 years, after adjusting for fracture risk status. A systematic approach to identifying patients at high risk for future fracture and tailoring treatment recommendations seemed to eliminate differences in treatment initiation rates based on older age.

Summary: This study found that patients aged 50-80 years with low health literacy are more likely to use daily medications and have poorer self-rated health, especially among men and those with lower socioeconomic status. Low health literacy is associated with perceptions that taking prescribed medicines daily is difficult, forgetting to take prescribed medicines, lower satisfaction with life, and poor self-assessed health.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of a 4-week resistance training program on body composition, muscular fitness, and flexibility in men and women aged 50-80 years. The results showed that the resistance training program had positive effects on body composition, muscular fitness, and flexibility. However, the improvements in upper and lower muscular fitness were more significant in men and women aged 50-64 years compared to their older counterparts (65-80 years).

Summary: The National Poll on Healthy Aging conducted a survey in October 2017 with a sample of 2,007 adults aged 50-80 years to assess attitudes towards influenza vaccination policies in long-term care facilities. The findings revealed that support for requiring vaccinations was lowest among visitors. These findings can assist policy makers in developing sustainable vaccination strategies.

Summary: The present study aimed to establish normative data for the Detection Test for Language Impairments in Adults and the Aged (DTLA) in the population older than 80 years of age. The researchers expanded the study sample to include 149 healthy, community-dwelling, French-speaking adults aged 80 years old and older, and calculated cutoff and alert scores for the screening test based on education level. The solid normative data derived from this study are now available to clinicians and researchers for accurate language disorder assessment.

Summary: The study found that in healthy Saudi adults aged 50-80, the 6-minute walk distance is significantly correlated with age, sex, height, body mass index, and physical activity. For men, the predictors of 6-MWD were age and BMI, while for women, they also included height. The measured 6-MWD was significantly shorter than the predicted values.

Summary: This study aimed to provide normative data for the 12-item Buschke memory test in the Quebec-French population aged 50 and older. Results showed that age, years of formal education, and sex were associated with performance on the test. Normative data were provided in the form of Z-scores equations and percentiles. These findings are important for improving clinicians' accuracy in detecting verbal episodic memory impairments in Quebec's aging population.

Summary: A multi-analytical study was conducted to characterize wall paintings from al-Qarawiyyin university in Fez, dating back to the 9th century. The study aimed to identify the pigments used and determine the painting techniques employed by Moroccan craftsmen at that time. The investigation utilized various analytical techniques, such as Raman and ATR-FTIR, to examine color, structure, and elemental composition. The results revealed the pigments used to achieve different colors and shades, as well as the lime-secco-painting technique adopted.

Summary: The thermal relaxation of the silica metamict phase obtained after electron irradiation of 11 GGy Suprasil SiO2 glass was studied using Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that the local density indicators decreased under thermal treatment, but for 107 Gy samples, there was an anomalous increase in density between 800 degrees C and 1000 degrees C. After annealing at 1000 degrees C, the relaxed metamict phase exhibited a higher configurational disorder than pristine silica, while 107 Gy samples simply relaxed towards pristine silica.

Summary: Our study reports the oldest reliable evidence of organic red pigment use 15,000 years ago by sedentary hunter-gatherers in the Levant. Through the analysis of red-stained shell beads, we identified the use of a colorant made from Rubiaceae plants roots for personal adornments by the Early Natufian people. This discovery broadens our understanding of ornamental practices and pigmenting materials during a crucial period in human history.

Summary: Ancient charcoal fragments provide a unique opportunity to reconstruct past climate, especially precipitation regimes, through stable carbon isotope analysis. However, the carbonisation temperature can affect the initial carbon isotope composition, and post-depositional oxidation in soils and sediments can lead to an underestimation of past carbonisation temperatures.
