Recent studies demonstrate that chlorophyll a (chl a) concentrations in ocean surface waters can be significantly enhanced due to typhoons. The present study investigated chl a concentrations in the middle of the South China Sea (SCS) from 1997 to 2007. Only the Category 1 (minimal) Typhoon Hagibis (2007) had a notable effect on chl a concentrations. Typhoon Hagibis had a strong upwelling potential due to its location near the equator, and the forcing time of the typhoon (>82 h) was much longer than the geostrophic adjustment time (similar to 63 h). The higher upwelling velocity and the longer forcing time increased the depth of the mixed-layer, which consequently induced a strong phytoplankton bloom that accounted for about 30% of the total annual chl a concentration in the middle of the SCS. Induction of significant upper ocean responses can be expected if the forcing time of a typhoon is long enough to establish strong upwelling.

Summary: Developing advanced patterning techniques for colloidal nanocrystals is crucial for high-performance electronic/optoelectronic devices. The researchers have developed a direct method to pattern functional nanocrystals without the need for complicated photolithography processes or photosensitive molecules. The obtained patterns allow for postpatterning ligand exchange, enabling the fabrication of thin-film transistors and light-emitting diodes with enhanced performances.

The influence of A-site dipole moment on iodine migration in perovskite films revealed by transient ion drift

Biao Li, Xuehui Xu, Yuxin Yao, Pengjie Hang, Chenxia Kan, Ying Wang, Yiqiang Zhang, Yang (Michael) Yang, Deren Yang, Xuegong Yu

Summary: This study investigates the influence of the dipole moment of A-site ions on the migration of iodine ions in perovskite films. It finds that a decrease in the dipole moment of A-site ions leads to a decrease in the activation energy of iodine ions. Therefore, increasing the dipole moment of A-site ions can be an effective strategy for suppressing iodine migration in perovskite films and enhancing the long-term stability of PSCs.

Variation Trends of Asymmetrical Precipitable Water Vapor Outside the Tropical Cyclone Center Over the WNP and WSP Ocean

Shiwei Yu, Zhizhao Liu, Yuanjian Yang

Summary: The concentration of precipitable water vapor (PWV) in tropical cyclones (TCs) has shown a sensitive response to global warming, with a north-leaning (south-leaning) property over the western North Pacific (WNP) (western South Pacific (WSP)) regions. The expansion of the TC-concentrated PWV area and the decrease in its spatial gradient over the WNP (WSP) from 2008 to 2020 indicate the impact of global warming on TC behavior and increased flood risk. PWV is an important indicator of TC responses to global warming.
