Determination of mercury is important in the case of pharmaceuticals for which the European Union regulations have not defined the maximum permissible concentration of this metal. The aim of the study was to determine the levels of mercury in the following groups of drugs (n = 119): analgesics, diuretics, cardiacs, antihypertensives, anti-influenza, antibiotics, anti-allergics, tranquilizers, antibacterials and in dietary supplements (n = 33) available on the Polish market. Mercury was analyzed using cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectrometry CV-AFS. Its content in the samples varied in the range of 0.9-476.1 ng g(-1). Higher mercury concentrations were reported for prescription drugs (Rx): 0.9 -476.1 ng g(-1) (median: 7.4 ng g(-1)), lower - for non-prescription medicines (OTC): 1.2-45.8 ng g(-1) (median: 6.0 ng g(-1)). In the analyzed dietary supplements the concentrations were: 0.9-16.7 ng g(-1) (median: 5.9 ng g(-1)). On the basis of the information contained in the leaflet accompanying the medicine, a daily dose of mercury taken into the body with an analyzed medicament was estimated and the health risk posed by using such medicines was assessed. The study indicates that it is justified to carry out measurements of mercury in pharmaceuticals due to its high, potentially harmful. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Phosphate doping as a promising approach to improve reactivity of Nb2O5 in catalytic activation of hydrogen peroxide and removal of methylene blue via adsorption and oxidative degradation

Lukasz Wolski, Kamila Sobanska, Grzegorz Nowaczyk, Marcin Frankowski, Mariusz Pietrowski, Marcin Jarek, Mateusz Rozmyslak, Piotr Pietrzyk

Summary: This study investigates the influence of phosphate dopants on the reactivity of Nb2O5-based nanomaterials in the combined catalytic activation of H2O2 and the elimination of methylene blue (MB) from an aqueous solution. The results show that phosphate doping significantly enhances the ability of Nb2O5 to activate H2O2, as well as to adsorb and degrade MB. Under strongly acidic conditions, the modified catalysts with a Nb/P molar ratio of 5/1 exhibit a 6-fold increase in efficiency for MB removal compared to the parent Nb2O5.

Ferritin-mediated iron detoxification promotes hypothermia survival in Caenorhabditis elegans and murine neurons

Tina Pekec, Jaroslaw Lewandowski, Alicja A. Komur, Daria Sobanska, Yanwu Guo, Karolina Switonska-Kurkowska, Jedrzej M. Malecki, Abhishek Anil Dubey, Wojciech Pokrzywa, Marcin Frankowski, Maciej Figiel, Rafal Ciosk

Summary: This study uncovers a regulatory axis involving DAF-16/FoxO and PQM-1 that enhances the resistance of nematodes to severe cold. It is found that FTN-1/FTH1 facilitates cold survival by detoxifying iron species that generate reactive oxygen species. The findings suggest that this mechanism can also protect mammalian neurons from cold-induced degeneration, opening a potential avenue for improved treatments of hypothermia.

Removal of environmentally toxic sulfamethoxazole waste using TiO2-graphite systems and a tailor-made LED photoreactor: Unraveling the role of spectra-matching

Adam Kubiak, Hubert Fuks, Marcin Frankowski, Anna Szymczyk, Michal Ceglowski

Summary: In this study, TiO2-graphite photocatalysts were synthesized using a one-step in situ microwave procedure, and the influence of graphite content on the crystal structure, surface area development, and optical properties of the photocatalysts was determined. The presence of graphite caused a red shift in the absorption spectra, and a tailor-made LED photoreactor was designed to match the spectrum of the photocatalyst and the light source, resulting in enhanced elimination of sulfamethoxazole. The TiO2-graphite systems showed higher sulfamethoxazole removal efficiency compared to the reference TiO2, and exhibited good reusability, suggesting the potential of this spectral matching approach for wastewater treatment plants.

Summary: In this study, the researchers investigated whether sea spray can act as a secondary source of chlorinated persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the terrestrial Arctic. They analyzed polychlorinated biphenyls and organochlorine pesticides concentrations in fresh snow and seawater samples, and conducted isotopic analysis to support their interpretations. The results show a significant correlation between POPs concentrations and proximity to the sea, suggesting that sea spray can indeed contribute to the presence of chlorinated POPs in the Arctic.

Summary: In October 2022, the World Health Organization reevaluated the toxic equivalency factors (TEFs) for chlorinated dioxin-like compounds in a panel convened in Lisbon. This effort utilized an updated database, Bayesian dose response modeling, and meta-analysis to derive Best-Estimate TEFs. Applying these new TEFs may result in lower total toxic equivalents for dioxin-like chemicals.
