Summary: A combination of statistical and triblock copolymer properties is explored to produce stable aqueous polymer dispersions suitable for film formation. Through the synthesis of a series of triblock copolymers and controlling the hydrophilicity of the stabilizer block, the structural characteristics of the copolymers in dissolved, dispersed, and solid states were investigated. Small-angle X-ray scattering and atomic force microscopy revealed different morphologies of the copolymers in solvent and water, which were closely related to the mechanical properties of the cast films.

Summary: Gradient copolymers of n-butyl acrylate (nBA) and isobornyl acrylate (IBA) were prepared using reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) emulsion polymerization. The stepwise monomer addition process allowed for pre-specified gradient compositions to be obtained. H-1 NMR characterization revealed the gradient behavior of the copolymers. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis showed that gradient copolymers had broader glass-transition regions compared to homopolymers and statistical copolymers. The thermal properties of the copolymers can be controlled by the choice of comonomer feed composition and the steepness of the comonomer feed.

Summary: In this study, it was found that nitroxide-mediated radical polymerization (NMP) using BlocBuilder MA under continuous flow reaction conditions led to higher conversions and smaller polydispersity index (D) values compared to batch reaction conditions. The addition of a small amount of acetol or malononitrile accelerated the NMP reaction without sacrificing the quality of the polymer. Flow reactors allowed for precise control of the NMP process initiated by BlocBuilder MA and the synthesis of di-block copolymers.

Summary: The nitroxide-mediated radical polymerization (NMP) of styrene and butyl acrylate using BlocBuilder MA under continuous flow reaction conditions showed higher conversions and smaller polydispersity index (D) values compared with batch reaction conditions. The addition of a small amount of acetol or malononitrile accelerated the NMP reaction without sacrificing D values. Flow reactors enable the highly controlled synthesis of styrene and butyl acrylate NMP reactions initiated by BlocBuilder MA (BB MA) with additives, and BA-St di-block copolymers were also synthesized.

Summary: A novel mediated agent, TPPT, was successfully synthesized and used in the radical polymerization of butyl acrylate at 50 degrees C. The reaction kinetics showed that monomer conversion reached 84% within 24 hours with narrow molecular weight distributions. MALDI-TOF MS studies identified three polymerization mechanisms, indicating the effectiveness of TPPT in capturing growing radicals and forming stable chains.

Summary: This study reports the design and synthesis of two types of amphiphilic Janus SiO2 nanoparticles, PAA/PS Janus SiO2 and PAA/PMMA Janus SiO2. These nanoparticles can effectively stabilize P(St-BA) composite microspheres, forming low-cost oil displacing systems to improve oil recovery in heterogeneous and low-permeability reservoirs.

Summary: The introduction of m-xylyl substituents to alpha-diimine Pd-II catalyst promotes living ethylene polymerization, leading to high molecular weight polyethylene with low branching. The m-xylyl groups effectively block the axial sites of the catalytic center, preventing chain-transfer and easy accessibility of polar monomers, resulting in a living polymerization. Incorporating different acrylate block sequences can significantly modify the mechanical and chemical properties of block copolymers to be a hard plastic, elastomer, or semi-amorphous polymer.

Summary: This study investigated the use of carbon nanotubes as a pigment in toner development and achieved good dispersion of four different types of CNTs in water. It was found that CNTs modified with boron showed the highest monomer conversion and largest particle size. The newly developed toner particles were also found to be smaller and more environmentally friendly compared to commercially available toners.

Summary: The synthesis of sequence-controlled poly(ethylene-co-styrene) copolymers is challenging due to limitations in catalytic olefin polymerizations. An alternative method using ROMP of cyclic olefins followed by hydrogenation can generate ethylene copolymers with regioregularity. Investigating the ROMP of low-strain cyclododecenes provided useful information for mechanistic aspects of polymerization.

Summary: Two alpha-diimine nickel dimethyl complexes with different steric hindrance effects were synthesized and characterized. Organoboron cocatalysts B(C6F5)3 or [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] can activate these complexes for ethylene polymerization without the need for any organoaluminium cocatalysts or scavengers. B1 exhibits higher catalytic activity than B2, resulting in polyethylenes with slightly lower molecular weight, higher branching densities, and lower melting temperatures. The resulting polyolefins also display good tensile and elastic properties. DFT calculations suggest that the counter anion derived from B1 contributes to increased stability and activity.

Summary: Short-chain perfluoroalkyl styrenes were modified through insertion of tetrafluoro-lambda(6)-sulfanyl linked groups (-SF4-), forming side-chain fluoropolymers in emulsion copolymerization. Cotton fabrics treated with tetrafluorosulfanyl-modified fluoropolymers showed increased hydrophobicity compared to unmodified ones.

Summary: This study discusses two strategies to enhance the thermal stability of α-diimine nickel complexes and prepares complexes with different numbers of benzhydryl substitutions at the ortho- and para-positions of aniline. The results show that all complexes exhibit high polymerization activity and enhanced thermal stability in ethylene polymerization, with Ni3 demonstrating the best thermal stability. Computational chemistry methods were used to analyze the thermal stability, considering factors such as steric hindrance, electronic effects, complex stability, and non-covalent interactions. It is believed that the π-π stacking interaction can significantly enhance the catalytic activity of Ni3 at elevated temperatures, possibly due to the inhibition of chain transfer reactions. Therefore, the thermal stability of α-diimine nickel complexes is determined by the combined effect of multiple influencing factors.
