Summary: Polymerizations in aqueous dispersed media benefit from good heat transfer, low viscosity, low content of volatile compounds, and established industrial use. The implementation of ATRP in dispersed media has highlighted the possibility of achieving improved livingness and producing a variety of macromolecular architectures. ATRP techniques employing low-ppm catalyst loadings have enabled access to a larger variety of polymer architectures and functional polymer particles, which have found applications in molecular recognition, drug delivery, bio-quantification, and advanced coatings.

Summary: We synthesized a thermoresponsive polymer with a narrow molecular weight distribution using organic photo-redox-catalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization (O-ATRP). The O-ATRP was mediated by a photoredox catalyst 1,2,3,5-tetrakis (carbazol-9-yl)-4,6-dicyanobenzene (4CzIPN) under visible light irradiation. The polymerization of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) chains from a hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC)-based macroinitiator was characterized using various analytical methods. The resulting PMMA-grafted HPC (PMMA-g-HPC) showed a widened lower critical solution temperature (LCST) window and an inverse pH dependency of the LCST, making it promising for various applications including drug delivery systems.

Summary: Atom transfer radical polymerization has become one of the most dominant methods in controlled radical polymerization since its invention 25 years ago. The rise in importance is largely due to increases in scope, reduced catalyst loading, and improved oxygen tolerance. These developments have been underpinned by an improved understanding of the mechanism, kinetics, and structure-reactivity trends.

Summary: This article presents the kinetics and general features of a photopolymerization system for the first time, based on a proposed mechanism. Analytic formulas were developed to explore new features, including the relationship between free radical photopolymerization efficacy and nanogold production, and the competing procedures of nanogold production and photopolymerization efficacy. The efficacy of photopolymerization is contributed by components from the excited state of copper complex, while nanogold production is contributed by the coupling of components with gold ion.

Summary: This study reveals the formation and mechanisms of (E)-2-hexenal during tea processing, and identifies the role of CsHI in this process. Additionally, it shows that abiotic stresses can regulate the proportions of (Z)-3-hexenal and (E)-2-hexenal in torn tea leaves by modulating CsHI expression levels. The findings of this study are important for the development of tea flavor and plant defense against abiotic stresses.

Summary: Biological invasions, especially by Spartina alterniflora, are significantly impacting the structure and functions of coastal ecosystems in China. Urgent efforts to control the spread of this invasive species are hindered by the lack of time-series data. By using satellite images, this study successfully generated annual maps of Spartina saltmarshes from 1985 to 2020, revealing a continuous expansion of Spartina along the coast. The invasion history and frequency of changes were found to be influenced by latitude, with low latitudes experiencing longer and more frequent invasions. Human interventions have contributed to the decline in certain areas, but natural spread remains the primary driver of its extensive invasion.
