In order to establish the parameters to obtain aqueous mate extract with the highest content of total phenolic compounds (TPC), the response surface methodology (RSM) was used. The extract obtained at 100 degrees C, within 3 min and with pH of 6.0 was submitted to nanofiltration to concentrate the phenolic compounds of mate (Ilex paraguariensis A. St. Hill). The total phenolic content values in the permeate and in the concentrate collected in different volumetric reduction factors (VRF) were different from those detected in the feed extract. The concentration of phenolic compounds increased when VRF was increased, reaching the highest retention index (R) of 0.99 when VRF was 4.0. The permeate and the concentrate obtained in VRF 4.0 were verified through HPLC. 4,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid and gallic acid showed retention index of 1.00 and 0.95, respectively, while 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid and chlorogenic acid reached 0.99 and 0.98, respectively. Reconsidering the Need for Empirical Alignment and Wavelength Calibration Steps in the Building of a Dispersive NIR Spectrometer with an Application for Ethanol Quantification Using a Polymer Filament 3D Printer

Italo Pelicao Caliari, Jose Vitor Nicacio, Marcio Henrique Pereira Barbosa, Reinaldo Francisco Teofilo

Summary: This study aimed to construct a dispersive optical spectrometer using 3D design software and printing without optical adjustments, and successfully validated and applied it to quantify ethanol in multiproduct liquids. The spectrometer design was achieved by using a 3D design software to design a NIR spectrometer in the desired wavelength range, followed by printing the components on a 3D printer. Results demonstrated the feasibility and accuracy of the 3D-printed spectrometer for ethanol quantification, showing comparable predictive capabilities to commercial instruments.

Summary: This study conducted the first screening of 22 Citrus cultivars in a semi-arid tropical region based on their phytochemical and polyphenolic features, using multivariate chemometric analysis. The results showed that citric acid was the dominant organic acid, glucose and fructose were the major sugars, hesperidin was the predominant flavonoid in all Citrus, and naringin was the major polyphenol in pomelos. The findings suggest that phenolic profiles can be used for authentication of Citrus samples based on their origin and can potentially be applied to other fruits as well.

Phosphate Enrichment of Niobium-Based Catalytic Surfaces in Relation to Reactions of Carbohydrate Biomass Conversion: The Case Studies of Inulin Hydrolysis and Fructose Dehydration

Mariana N. Catrinck, Sebastiano Campisi, Paolo Carniti, Reinaldo F. Teofilo, Filippo Bossola, Antonella Gervasini

Summary: In this study, physical mixtures of Nb2O5•nH(2)O and NbOPO4 were prepared to investigate the role of phosphate groups in total acidity and two reactions involving carbohydrate biomass. The acid and catalytic properties were influenced by phosphate group enrichment. The presence of Bronsted sites on the surface favored inulin conversion and NbOPO4 exhibited the best hydrolysis activity with glucose/fructose formation. Additionally, a catalyst with a more phosphated surface showed reduced deactivation during the dehydration of fructose/glucose into HMF.

Dehydration as a Tool to improve predictability of sugarcane juice carbohydrates using near-infrared spectroscopy based PLS models

Wilson J. Cardoso, Joao G. R. Gomes, Jussara Roque, Marcio H. P. Barbosa, Reinaldo F. Teofilo

Summary: This study investigated the use of dehydration combined with near-infrared spectroscopy for predicting sucrose, glucose, and fructose in sugarcane juice. Dehydrated sugarcane juice showed better predictive performance in PLS models compared to liquid sugarcane juice, with the benchtop instrument outperforming the portable instrument. The results suggest that removing water and concentrating analytes through dehydration can significantly improve the predictability of NIR-based PLS models for sugars in sugarcane juice.

In-situ electrochemical and operando Raman techniques to investigate the effect of porosity in different carbon electrodes in organic electrolyte supercapacitors

Raissa Venancio, Rafael Vicentini, Lenon H. Costa, Reinaldo Teofilo, Leonardo M. Da Silva, Hudson Zanin

Summary: This work presents the analysis of micro-, meso-, and macro-porous carbon electrodes in a symmetrical supercapacitor filled with a 1.0 M TEABF(4) EC-DMC electrolyte. The results show that activated carbon (AC) is the most suitable electrode material due to its high specific capacitance and energy. Raman spectroscopy analysis reveals that AC experiences shifts in the D- and G-bands due to electrostatic ionic adsorption in narrow pores. Graphite, though having enough specific capacitance for competitive application, has a reduced overall surface area. Graphite's Raman analysis shows BF4- insertion into graphene layers. Overall, this study demonstrates that in-situ electrochemistry and Raman spectroscopy combined can provide important information on the energy storage process in supercapacitors.

Summary: Ilex paraguariensis, a species native to Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina, is highly valued for its positive effects on human health. The mate processing involves pre-drying, drying, and milling stages. Thermal and mass balance analysis of industrial mate processing units revealed that energy consumption in sapeco and drying operations exceeded the required calorific input. This highlights the need for optimizing energy consumption by adjusting temperature management during sapeco and drying stages, resulting in cost reduction and improved mate product quality.
