Summary: This study compared the efficacy and safety of mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) and tacrolimus (TAC) with azathioprine (AZA) as maintenance therapy for active lupus nephritis (ALN). The study found that long-term maintenance therapies with MMF or TAC have similarly low rates of renal relapse and similar safety profiles compared with AZA.

Clinical analysis of multi-target treatment for complex lupus nephritis

The efficacy of induction treatment in Thai patients with lupus nephritis: Observational cohort analysis

Summary: This observational study compared the clinical outcomes of Thai patients with active proliferative lupus nephritis who received induction treatment of intravenous cyclophosphamide (IVCYC) versus mycophenolate mofetil (MMF). The results showed that both IVCYC and MMF had similar efficacy in treating LN patients. Therefore, treatment decisions should be made based on individualized therapeutic strategies and considering the balance between risks, costs, and benefits.

Summary: Immune intervention of B cell activation to block the production of autoantibodies is of great interest in SLE therapy development. Engineered cellular nanovesicles presenting CD40 can disrupt the CD40/CD40L costimulatory signal axis and restrain the generation of the germinal center structure and production of antibodies from B cells. Encapsulating immunosuppressive drug MMF in these vesicles further enhances their effectiveness in depleting immunocytes and relieving autoimmunity.

Voclosporin: a novel calcineurin inhibitor for the treatment of lupus nephritis

Long-term renal survival of paediatric patients with lupus nephritis

However, long-term adverse events such as infertility could not be systematically evaluated in this retrospective pediatric study.

Successful Treatment of Mucocutaneous Lupus Erythematosus in a Dog with Prednisolone, Mycophenolate Mofetil and Tacrolimus

Summary: A 6-year-old miniature Pinscher dog diagnosed with mucocutaneous lupus erythematosus (MCLE) showed improvement with initial treatment of oral prednisolone, mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) and tacrolimus. Despite side effects from high-dose prednisolone, the condition was successfully managed by gradually tapering the dosage and continuing with MMF and tacrolimus, highlighting their effectiveness as steroid-sparing agents in treating MCLE in dogs.

Development of a novel Poly (I:C)-induced murine model with accelerated lupus nephritis and examination of the therapeutic effects of mycophenolate mofetil and a cathepsin S inhibitor

Summary: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease with diverse clinical presentations involving multiple organs. Renal involvement, particularly in lupus nephritis (LN), is common and has significant impact on prognosis. Therefore, establishing a clinically relevant LN animal model is crucial for developing new treatments. In this study, a novel mouse model for LN was successfully established by administering Poly (I:C) to NZB/W F1 mice. The model exhibited unique characteristics, including activation of macrophages, and showed significant response to mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) and cathepsin S (CatS) inhibitor ASP1617, indicating its usefulness for evaluating therapeutic candidates for LN.
