Background: Numerous studies indicate that smoking is associated with many factors that contribute to poorer outcomes in patients with lung cancer and may limit the efficacy of treatment, especially in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but little is known about its effect on treatment of resected NSCLC. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of smoking on adjuvant chemotherapy in patients with NSCLC. Another objective of our study was to investigate the relationship between smoking status and the clinical characteristics of patients with NSCLC. Methods: A sretrospective analysis was carried out on patients with NSCLC seen during the period January 1990 until December 2000. Clinical characteristics and survival outcomes were reviewed and compared between patients with different smoking status. Results: Of 1270 patients who were eligible for analysis, 319 received adjuvant chemotherapy. Sex, age, tumor location, tumor size, symptoms including hemoptysis, cough, blood in sputum and histologic types were different between smokers and non-smokers. Patients with PY > 22.75 were more likely to have squamous cell lung cancer. In non-smokers and patients with PY <= 10, 5-year survival. was better for patients receiving adjuvant chemotherapy compared to those without adjuvant chemotherapy, but in patients with PY > 10, adjuvant chemotherapy did not have a survival benefit. Conclusions: A patient with PY > 22.75 is more likely to develop squamous cell tung cancer. In non-smokers and patients with PY <= 10, adjuvant chemotherapy has a survival benefit. Impact of water-rock interaction on the pore structures of red-bed soft rock

Meiling Zhou, Jianlin Li, Zuosen Luo, Jianbin Sun, Feng Xu, Qiao Jiang, Huafeng Deng

Summary: The study found that water-rock interaction leads to an increase in pore size, an initial increase and subsequent decrease in the number of pores, a change in pore shape from oblate to slender, as well as variations in shape factor and fractal dimension. The results provide insights into the damage of rock mesostructure under water-rock interaction.

Comparative transcriptome and microbial community sequencing provide insight into yellow-leaf phenotype of Camellia japonica

Mingyue Fu, Zhongcheng Zhou, Xu Yang, Zhongbing Liu, Jiarui Zheng, Xinru Huang, Ling Wang, Jiabao Ye, Weiwei Zhang, Yongling Liao, Feng Xu

Summary: The study revealed that the yellowing Camellia japonica leaves had lower pigment content and weakened photosynthesis compared to its parent. Further analysis showed damaged chloroplast structures and increased Didymella abundance in the mutant leaves, indicating a potential pathogen-induced leaf color variation mechanism.

Comparative transcriptome analysis provides novel insights into the molecular mechanism of berberine biosynthesis in Coptis chinensis

Xiao-Meng Liu, Jun-Ping Tan, Shui-Yuan Cheng, Ze-Xiong Chen, Jia-Bao Ye, Jia-Rui Zheng, Feng Xu, Wei-Wei Zhang, Yong-Ling Liao, Xiao-Yan Yang

Summary: Berberine is the primary medicinal component of Coptis chinensis, with pharmacological effects such as heat-clearing and detoxifying. The content and gene expression levels of alkaloids in C. chinensis were investigated to reveal the molecular regulation of berberine accumulation in the plant. The study provides resources and technical support for enhancing the medicinal value of C. chinensis through genetic engineering.

Novel immune scoring dynamic nomograms based on B7-H3, B7-H4, and HHLA2: Potential prediction in survival and immunotherapeutic efficacy for gallbladder cancer

Chao Lv, Shukun Han, Baokang Wu, Zhiyun Liang, Yang Li, Yizhou Zhang, Qi Lang, Chongli Zhong, Lei Fu, Yang Yu, Feng Xu, Yu Tian

Summary: This study developed immune scoring systems focusing on B7-H3, B7-H4, and HHLA2, and demonstrated their potential in predicting survival and immunotherapeutic efficacy for gallbladder cancer (GBC). The results showed that these immune scoring systems were associated with worse clinicopathological stage and unfavorable prognosis in postoperative survival. Additionally, novel prediction models based on immune stratification and TNM staging showed excellent discrimination ability in predicting survival and immunotherapeutic efficacy for GBC patients.

Advances in Research on the Involvement of Selenium in Regulating Plant Ecosystems

Wei Chao, Shen Rao, Qiangwen Chen, Weiwei Zhang, Yongling Liao, Jiabao Ye, Shuiyuan Cheng, Xiaoyan Yang, Feng Xu

Summary: Selenium is an essential trace element for human immune regulation and disease prevention. In plants, organic selenium compounds promote plant growth, improve nutritional quality, and play important roles in plant ecosystems. Selenium accumulation plants release selenium-containing compounds that promote the growth of selenium accumulators but inhibit the growth and distribution of non-selenium accumulators.
