Summary: With the rapid development of biopharmaceuticals and the outbreak of COVID-19, there is a growing interest in the development of gene therapy. Gene therapy relies on specific vectors for stable and efficient gene delivery. While viral vectors have been widely used, there is a concern regarding their safety. Non-viral vectors based on nanotechnology have gained attention, but they still need improvement in terms of transfection efficiency and tissue targeting. Pulmonary gene delivery is particularly advantageous for treating lung diseases and enhancing vaccine efficacy. This review provides a comprehensive overview of nanocarriers as non-viral vectors for pulmonary gene delivery, discussing the characteristics of therapeutic genes, the advantages and challenges of pulmonary gene delivery, the inhalation dosage forms for nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems, and the materials used as nanocarriers.

Summary: Increasing oxygen content and down-regulating glutathione concentration in the tumor microenvironment are crucial for enhancing the effectiveness of photodynamic therapy. In this study, a multifunctional nanocomposite called IDMMS@CaP NC was designed to achieve these goals. The nanocomposite can collapse and release Mn2+, Ca2+, and ICG in the mildly acidic and GSH overexpressed tumor microenvironment, leading to GSH depletion and increased oxygen content. This enhances the photodynamic therapy efficiency of indocyanine green (ICG) and provides a general strategy for cancer treatment.

Summary: Polymethine cyanine dyes have attracted increasing attention in fluorescent bioimaging applications due to their high molar extinction coefficients, intensive fluorescence brightness, and flexible wavelength tunability. Recent advances in the development of NIR-II polymethine fluorophores have focused on improving optical performance, including tunable fluorescence, improved brightness, water solubility, and stability. This review summarizes the molecular tailoring design strategies and highlights representative bioimaging and biosensing applications. The potential challenges and perspectives of NIR-II polymethine fluorophores in this emerging field are also discussed.

Summary: Octahedral-shaped Cu2O nanocrystals were synthesized and used as catalyst for benzylic sp(3) C-H bond oxidation. The oxidation of Cu2O to CuO can be avoided in the dark or inert atmosphere or continuous flow of oxygen gas. The proposed reaction mechanism involves activation of O-2 molecule through single electron transfer (SET) mechanism on the (111) facets of semiconducting Cu2O NCs in light.

Summary: Fe3O4@L-Arginine and Fe3O4@L-Histidine nanoparticles were synthesized and used as catalysts for sequential Knoevenagel condensation and Michael addition reactions. Optimized reaction parameters resulted in high yields of 97% in Knoevenagel adducts and 70% in Michael products under solvent-free conditions at 80 degrees C. However, Fe3O4@L-Histidine NPs did not show any catalytic activity for the sequential Michael addition. The reasons behind the high activities of Fe3O4@L-Arginine NPs have been discussed, and the catalyst could be reused for 5 cycles with consistent activity and selectivity. This optimized protocol offers high isolated yields, cost savings in solvents, and falls within the domain of green chemistry.
