Oldoinyo Lengai and the volcanic centres of the Lake Natron-Engaruka province contain melilite as a widespread mineral. Extraordinarily Na-Al-rich melilites (up to 6 wt.% Na2O and 9 wt.% Al2O3) from recent explosive eruptions are among the most Na-rich ever reported. Their unusual mineral composition leads to optical properties with vivid birefringence colours of 2nd order. The continuous variation in mineral composition from common akermanite to Na-Al-melilite (alumoakermanite) is documented and reflects the whole peralkaline trend of Oldoinyo Lengai. The data presented allow the volcano's evolution from primitive olivine melilitites to highly evolved and peralkaline combeite-wollastonite nephelinites to be traced. Melilite compositions of Oldoinyo Lengai extend the magmatic field in the Ca2Fe(Si2O7)-Ca2Mg(Si2O7)-(CaNa)A1 (Si2O7) end-member ternary compositional diagram. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Oscillatory- and sector-zoned pyrochlore from carbonatites of the Kerimasi volcano, Gregory rift, Tanzania

Anatoly N. Zaitsev, John Spratt, Alexander G. Shtukenberg, Andrei A. Zolotarev, Sergey N. Britvin, Sergey Petrov, Alina Kuptsova, Anton Antonov

Summary: The Kerimasi volcano in northern Tanzania is composed of nephelinitic and carbonatitic pyroclastic rocks, tuffs, tuff breccias and pyroclastic breccias. The pyrochlore composition in the Loluni and Kisete craters suggest crystallisation from compositionally different carbonatitic melts. The majority of pyrochlore crystals studied exhibit well-preserved zoning patterns.

The Petrology of the Tarosero Volcanic Complex: Constraints on the Formation of Extrusive Agpaitic Rocks

S. Braunger, M. A. W. Marks, T. Wenzel, A. N. Zaitsev, G. Markl

Summary: This study investigates the genetic relationships between different rock types and focuses on the peculiar formation conditions of the extrusive agpaitic rocks at Tarosero volcano. The results suggest that the Tarosero rocks formed at redox conditions and there is no simple genetic relationship between the trachytes and other rock types. Some rock types, such as primitive basalts and intermediate latites, can be explained by high-pressure fractional crystallization.

Summary: The discovery of terrestrial allabogdanite (Fe, Ni)(2)P in the pyrometamorphic rocks surrounding the Dead Sea basin in Israel is a significant finding, indicating its metastability at ambient pressure and stability at high-pressure, high-temperature conditions. Partial substitution of Fe for Ni and Mo has been shown to significantly increase the transition pressure of allabogdanite, highlighting the influence of impurities on phase transitions in natural systems.

Laetoli: The Oldest Known Hominin Footprints in Volcanic Ash

Anatoly N. Zaitsev, Anton R. Chakhmouradian, Charles Musiba

Summary: Hominin footprints in eastern Africa, found in Laetoli (Tanzania), Ileret (Kenya), and Melka Kunture (Ethiopia), provide valuable information on body size, anatomy, positional behavior, and locomotion biomechanics of Australopithecus afarensis, Homo erectus, and Homo heidelbergensis. The most well-known and extensively studied footprints are the 3.66-million-year-old Australopithecus afarensis tracks at Laetoli, representing the earliest record of hominin bipedalism in Africa. However, recent excavations reveal that this important paleoanthropological site is gradually disappearing due to surface diagenetic processes, highlighting the urgent need for preservation.

Thermodynamic analysis of primary and secondary mineral stability in melilite- nephelinite tuff with Australopithecus Afarensis footprints (Laetoli, Tanzania)

Elena N. Perova, Anatoly N. Zaitsev, John Spratt, Nataliya S. Vlasenko, Nataliya V. Platonova, Olga G. Bubnova

Summary: The Laetoli area in northern Tanzania is an important site for paleoanthropological studies, as it contains the oldest footprints of Australopithecus afarensis. The major rock type in Laetoli is aeolian tuffs, which are divided into Lower and Upper Laetolil Beds. The Upper Laetolil Beds contain eight layers of air-fall tuffs known as marker tuffs, and it is on one of these layers, specifically marker tuff 7, that the Australopithecus afarensis footprints are found.

L. Notini, M. Scambelluri, A. Tommasi, A. Zanetti, F. Ferri, A. Rodriguez-Vargas, E. Rampone

Summary: This study provides important petrologic information on the mantle wedge above an active subduction zone in Southern Colombia. The researchers analyzed a unique suite of rock samples and found evidence of hydration, metasomatism, and partial melting in the mantle wedge. They also observed variations in lithotypes, textures, and mineral abundance, indicating different interactions with melts and fluids. This study sheds light on the complex petrological processes occurring in the mantle wedge and contributes to our understanding of subduction zone dynamics.

Summary: This study investigates the zircon ages and whole-rock geochemical data of Late Paleozoic magmatic rocks in the Western Yunnan Tethyan belt to identify the origin and mechanism of mantle melting.
