U-Pb spot zircon ages from metagabbros and rnetasediments of the Variscan lower crust in the Serre massif (southern Calabria) have been determined using LA-ICPMS and SIMS. The results, together with the literature data deriving from conventional and spot zircon ages and front Rb-Sr whole-rock isochrons, allow the geological history of the crustal block to be more tightly constrained from the Late Neoproterozoic to the Triassic, with particular emphasis on Variscan evolution. In a peri-Gondwana Pan-African/Cadomian basement, preserving memory of recycled older terrains with West African Craton affinities, mafic and felsic magmas emplaced at ca. 584 Ma (protoliths of metagabbros) and in the range 575-537 Ma (protoliths of felsic orthogneisses). Partially or completely recrystallized domains of zircons from metaigneous rocks yield ages ranging from 500 to 440 Ma. These ages (consistent with those of recrystallized cores of magmatic zircon from felsic orthogneisses and with Rb-Sr isochron data for the lower crust metasediments) suggest tectonothermal Ordovician activity, which is likely to be connected to the opening of Palaeozoic basin(s) separating the future Variscan blocks from Gondwana. Most zircon ages in the metasediments cluster in the 340-260 Ma range, which probably corresponds to two major events: (i) crustal thickening between 340 and 300 Ma (Barrowian metamorphic event) and (ii) lower-P/high-T metamorphism, Bt-dehydration inching, crustal extension between 300 and 260 Ma. Triassic ages ranging from 249 4 Ma to 231 5 Ma, together with whole-rock Rb-Sr isochron age at 234 Ma for the lowermost metapelites of the section, Suggest tectonothermal activity, which prepared the opening of the Jurassic Neotethys. Similarities and differences relative to some circum-Mediterranean Variscan lower crust sections are also discussed, which contribute to the knowledge of south European Variscides evolution. U-Pb detrital zircon ages from Gorgoglione Flysch sandstones in Southern Apennines (Italy) as provenance indicators

Annamaria Fornelli, Salvatore Gallicchio, Francesca Micheletti, Antonio Langone

Summary: The study of sandstone samples from the Southern Apennines in Italy revealed that the detritus provenance of the Gorgoglione Flysch consisted of metamorphic rocks with abundant granitoids covered by sedimentary rocks, with a volcanic component present. Utilizing U-Pb detrital zircon ages, the provenance area was identified in the northwestern sectors of the Mediterranean area, where the Sardinia-Corsica block plays a fundamental role.

What can high-P sheared orthogneisses tell us? An example from the Curinga-Girifalco Line (Calabria, southern Italy)

Summary: The formation and evolution of HP mineral assemblages in metagranitoids are influenced by fluid presence during ductile shear under preferential pathways, such as ductile shear zones in the Earth's crust. This study in the Castagna Unit in southern Italy reveals that the mineral assemblages in orthogneisses vary between weakly deformed samples and those within shear zones, with recrystallization induced by fluids during deformation. The mylonitic orthogneisses share the same peak metamorphic conditions as weakly deformed orthogneisses, but with a different equilibrium mineral assemblage stabilized along a fluid-conservative prograde path.

EVALUATION OF NUMIDIAN QUARTZ SANDSTONES FROM SOUTHERN ITALY FOR INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS

Annamaria Fornelli, Francesca Micheletti

Summary: The Numidian quartz-rich sandstones from the Apennine chain in Southern Italy were studied for their potential industrial use. Sandstones from NW areas are suitable for the glass industry, while those from SE areas are more suitable for colored glass and paint industry raw materials. This study suggests a complete exploitation of these sandstone resources in the manufacturing industry to reduce waste materials and enhance economic value.

Petrographic and Geochemical Inferences for Genesis of Terra Rossa: A Case Study from the Apulian Karst (Southern Italy)

Francesca Micheletti, Annamaria Fornelli, Luigi Spalluto, Mario Parise, Salvatore Gallicchio, Fabrizio Tursi, Vincenzo Festa

Summary: The genesis of terra rossa, a reddish clay soil found in limestone regions with a Mediterranean-type climate, is a controversial subject regarding the origin of the parent material. This study aims to understand the geochemical processes leading to the formation of terra rossa from carbonate bedrock. A multi-method analysis was conducted on a terra rossa deposit in southern Italy, revealing the mineralogical composition and providing evidence for the polygenetic origin of terra rossa through limestone alteration and chemical interaction with allochthonous siliciclastic material.

Ductile Shearing and Focussed Rejuvenation: Records of High-P (eo-)Alpine Metamorphism in the Variscan Lower Crust (Serre Massif, Calabria-Southern Italy)

Vincenzo Festa, Annamaria Fornelli, Francesca Micheletti, Richard Spiess, Fabrizio Tursi

Summary: In this study, the significance of mylonitic reworking in the Serre Massif of Calabria, Italy is revealed through a multidisciplinary approach. The study investigates the structural, microstructural, and petrologic changes in a shear zone affecting Variscan lower crustal rocks. The findings suggest that this shear zone is of prime importance and challenge the previous understanding of the region as an undisturbed continuous section of the Variscan crust. The role of (eo-)Alpine high-pressure tectonics in the Serre Massif is highlighted, indicating a complete rejuvenation of the Variscan basement.

Probing the deep mantle wedge in an active subduction zone: Xenoliths from the Mercaderes Volcanic District, Southern Colombia

L. Notini, M. Scambelluri, A. Tommasi, A. Zanetti, F. Ferri, A. Rodriguez-Vargas, E. Rampone

Summary: This study provides important petrologic information on the mantle wedge above an active subduction zone in Southern Colombia. The researchers analyzed a unique suite of rock samples and found evidence of hydration, metasomatism, and partial melting in the mantle wedge. They also observed variations in lithotypes, textures, and mineral abundance, indicating different interactions with melts and fluids. This study sheds light on the complex petrological processes occurring in the mantle wedge and contributes to our understanding of subduction zone dynamics.

Summary: The Hogenakkal complex in India consists of silicate-rich and silicate-poor carbonatites and clinopyroxenites. The formation of carbonatite is influenced by silicate minerals. The carbohydrothermal mineralization in the carbonatites is induced by magma-derived fluids and interactions with the surrounding rocks.

Partial melting of multiple mantle domains underneath the Paleo-Tethyan cold subduction zone triggered by slab rollback

Summary: This study investigates the zircon ages and whole-rock geochemical data of Late Paleozoic magmatic rocks in the Western Yunnan Tethyan belt to identify the origin and mechanism of mantle melting. The results suggest that these magmatic rocks may originate from different mantle domains that were metasomatized by slab-derived fluids and sediment-derived melts.
