The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of oxidative stress in the pathobiology of lymphoid leukaemias and its involvement in leukaemic relapse. For this purpose the generation of peroxides by mononuclear cells, the erythrocyte activity of superoxide-dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GL-PX), and the plasma levels of reduced glutathione (GSH) and vitamin E (VIT E) were determined in 52 patients with two different types of lymphoid leukaemias, chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) and acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), 36 prior to chemotherapy and 16 treated patients. A decrease in SOD and GL-PX activities was observed in ALL patients prior to therapy, while a decrease in GSH and VIT E plasma levels was observed in untreated CLL, as compared to age-matched controls. An increase in peroxides formation occurred in both types of leukaemia, as compared to age-matched controls. There are significant differences for GSH, VIT E and peroxides generation between the different types of leukaemias. In relapsed ALL patients a decrease in peroxides generation was observed which may be due to the increase of the non-enzymatic defences GSH and VIT E. These data suggest the involvement of oxidative stress in acute and chronic lymphoid leukaemias and leukaemic relapse. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Modified milk fat as encapsulating material for the probiotic microorganism Lactobacillus acidophilus LA3

Kivea Kassia de Paiva e Silva, Mayara de Souza Queiros, Ana Paula Badan Ribeiro, Mirna Lucia Gigante

Summary: The study evaluated the potential of modified anhydrous milk fat as an encapsulating material for Lactobacillus acidophilus LA3. Encapsulated L. acidophilus showed high viability after 60 days of storage, with lower temperatures resulting in microparticles with a dry, fine and dispersed appearance. In contrast, higher temperatures led to microparticles with a granular appearance and less dispersion.

Residential and school green and blue spaces and intelligence in children: The Generation XXI birth cohort

Diogo Queiroz Almeida, Henrique Barros, Ana Isabel Ribeiro

Summary: Green and blue spaces have a positive impact on children's cognitive development and intelligence quotient (IQ). Specifically, this study found that the presence of green spaces near residential areas is associated with higher performance and global IQ among children. However, accessibility to blue spaces does not show a clear association with IQ.

Atmospheric water harvesting on MIL-100(Fe) upon a cyclic adsorption process

Marcia P. Silva, Ana M. Ribeiro, Claudia G. Silva, Kyung Ho Cho, U-Hwang Lee, Joaquim L. Faria, Jose M. Loureiro, Jon-San Chang, Alirio E. Rodrigues, Alexandre Ferreira

Summary: The main objective of this study is to design an efficient adsorptive process to extract water from thin air using MIL-100(Fe) as the adsorbent. The study evaluated the suitability and affinity of MIL-100(Fe) towards CO2, N-2, O-2, and H2O through equilibrium and dynamic studies. The research also developed models and analyzed the adsorption behavior and regeneration capability of MIL-100(Fe) using various techniques.

Can aged microplastics be transport vectors for organic micropollutants? - Sorption and phytotoxicity tests

Mariana N. Miranda, Ana R. Lado Ribeiro, Adrian M. T. Silva, M. Fernando R. Pereira

Summary: This study investigates the influence of plastic aging on the sorption capacity and behavior of microplastics. The results show that aged microplastics have a higher sorption capacity for certain organic micropollutants compared to pristine microplastics. Phytotoxicity tests suggest that the behavior of microplastics in soil-plant systems is relatively stable and does not have significant toxic effects.

Alvespimycin Inhibits Heat Shock Protein 90 and Overcomes Imatinib Resistance in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Cell Lines

Raquel Alves, Diogo Santos, Joana Jorge, Ana Cristina Goncalves, Steve Catarino, Henrique Girao, Joana Barbosa Melo, Ana Bela Sarmento-Ribeiro

Summary: Heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) plays a crucial role in stabilizing and protecting client proteins. Alvespimycin, an HSP90 inhibitor, has shown potential in overcoming imatinib resistance in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) cell lines. This study found that Alvespimycin effectively reduced metabolic activity and induced cell death, apoptosis, and cell cycle arrest in imatinib-sensitive and imatinib-resistant CML cells. It also increased HSP70 expression as a marker of HSP90 inhibition. These findings suggest that Alvespimycin could be a promising therapeutic approach for CML treatment, even in cases of imatinib resistance.

Platelet Membrane Proteins as Pain Biomarkers in Patients with Severe Dementia

Hugo Ribeiro, Raquel Alves, Joana Jorge, Ana Cristina Goncalves, Ana Bela Sarmento-Ribeiro, Manuel Teixeira-Verissimo, Marilia Dourado, Jose Paulo Andrade

Summary: This study found that certain membrane platelet proteins may serve as biomarkers for pain characterization. These biomarkers, including CD40, CD49f, CD62p, and CD61, can provide objective information about pain levels without relying on patient self-report. The identification of these biomarkers could lead to more effective pain management strategies.
