During a screening for potential plant disease control actinomycetes, a total of 133 strains were isolated from Saharan soil samples of seven Algerian regions by dilution technique on chitin-vitamins agar medium. Screening for antagonistic properties using streak assay method showed that 25% of isolates demonstrated strong activities against a wide range of plant pathogenic fungi. Due to their strong anti-Fusarium activities, six of these isolates were selected and subsequently related to Streptomyces species by polyphasic analysis. These isolates were evaluated for their biocontrol ability against Fusarium culmorum, a serious pathogenic fungus of cereals crops related to damping-off and seedling blight resulting in yield loss. Barley seeds were chosen as cereal plant model. Surface bacterized seeds with TW3, RI3 and TW2 strains expressed the highest performances and permit to reduce significantly both the disease occurrence on seedlings (62-76%) and the extent of seedling blight symptoms (over than 95%). However, a negative effect on plant establishment was observed for RI3 treatment.

Summary: This study isolated seven strong halotolerant endophytic bacteria from the roots of Stipa tenacissima L. and found that strains ST09, ST18, and ST19 showed growth promotion effects on tomato plants under salt stress conditions. These strains could increase germination rates, root elongation, and biomass of tomato seedlings, with strain ST19 of the genus Kocuria showing the highest efficiency in mitigating salt stress.

Summary: The use of halotolerant beneficial plant-growth-promoting (PGP) bacteria is considered a promising eco-friendly approach to improve salt tolerance in cash crops. This study identified 8 salt-tolerant endophytic bacteria from the roots of Sahara-inhabiting halophytes and found that strain IS26 was the most effective at promoting plant growth and mitigating salt stress in tomato plants. Through genetic analysis, the strain was found to possess various genes related to rhizosphere colonization, plant association, nutrient competition, and the production of important plant growth regulator compounds and stress protection substances. It also had genes related to osmosensing, osmoregulation, osmoprotection, and antioxidant processes. Overall, this strain showed great potential for adaptation to highly saline environments.

Summary: Endophytic strains of Bacillus cereus group were isolated from halophytes in Algeria and were found to have the ability to alleviate salt stress in tomatoes and wheat. Comparative genomics analysis of Bacillus sp. BH32 revealed genes related to stress tolerance, antioxidant production, plant growth promotion, and secondary metabolite production.

Pressurized Liquid Extraction for the Recovery of Carotenoids and Functional Compounds from Green and Orange Dunaliella salina Biomasses

Summary: In recent years, various methods have been studied for the extraction of natural carotenoids. Conventional methods often require a large amount of solvents and a lengthy extraction process. However, pressurized liquid extraction has shown promising results. This study focused on the extraction of carotenoids from the green and orange biomasses of microalga Dunaliella salina DunaDZ1 using different organic solvents and temperatures. The results showed that higher temperatures had a positive effect on extraction yield, while the best antioxidant activity was obtained at a specific temperature and with a certain solvent.

Summary: This study focused on the biodiversity of actinobacteria in the Mediterranean Sea habitat. The results showed higher diversity in sediment than in seawater. Through 16S rRNA sequencing, ten different genera were identified, with Streptomyces and Micromonospora being the most dominant. The study also discovered a novel species. Furthermore, 36% of the isolates exhibited antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria. Most strains were found to be halotolerant, but did not require seawater for growth.
