Recent studies have shown that direct laser metal sintering (DLMS) produces structures with complex geometry and consequently that allow better osteoconductive properties. The aim of this patient report was to evaluate the early bone response to DLMS implant surface retrieved from human jaws. Four experimental DLMS implants were inserted in the posterior mandible of four patients during conventional dental implant surgery. After 8 weeks, the micro-implants and the surrounding tissue were removed and prepared for scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and histomorphometric analysis to evaluate the bone-implant interface. The SEM and EDX evaluations showed a newly formed tissue composed of calcium and phosphorus. The bone-to-implant contact presented a mean of 60.5 +/- 11.6%. Within the limits of this patient report, data suggest that the DLMS surfaces presented a close contact with the human bone after a healing period of 8 weeks.

Fin systems comparative anatomy in model Batoidea Raja asterias and Torpedo marmorata: Insights and relatioships between musculo-skeletal layout, locomotion and morphology

Ugo E. E. Pazzaglia, Marcella Reguzzoni, Renata Manconi, Luca Lanteri, Guido Zarattini, Piero A. A. Zecca, Mario Raspanti

Summary: The macroscopic and microscopic morphology of the appendicular skeleton in Raja asterias and Torpedo marmorata was studied. The study compared the organization and structural layout of the pectoral, pelvic, and tail fin systems. The research found that the pectoral fin system in T. marmorata was affected by the presence of two electric organs, resulting in a reduced surface area and lower efficiency compared to R. asterias. The study also observed similarities and differences in the morphology and calcification pattern of the fin-ray structures in both species. The findings provided new insights into the structural layout of the wing-fins and its correlation to Batoid swimming behavior. The observations also suggest a possible cartilage-calcification process in the formation of the appendicular skeleton. The study is rated 9 out of 10 for its importance.

Caio Junji Tanaka, Jose Augusto Rodrigues, Joao Marcos Spessoto Pingueiro, Tatiane Tiemi Macedo, Magda Feres, Jamil Awad Shibli, Bruno Bueno-Silva

Summary: Bioactive materials with fluoride release and antimicrobial potential are widely used in dentistry. However, the antimicrobial activity of bioactive surface pre-reacted glass (S-PRG) coatings on periodontopathogenic biofilms has been insufficiently studied. This study investigated the antibacterial activity of S-PRG fillers on a multi-species subgingival biofilm. The results showed that the bioactive coating containing S-PRG modified the composition of the subgingival biofilm in vitro and reduced the bacterial activity by 25.7%.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the interfaces of the epiphyseal plate with over- and underlying bone segments using an integrated approach of histochemistry, microtomography, and scanning electron microscopy. The two interfaces showed significant differences, with the diaphyseal side exhibiting active calcification and slow remodeling of cartilage into bone, while the epiphyseal side showed marginal and discontinuous mineralization and a loose trabecular bone structure. The calcification process in both sides involved the formation of spheroidal bodies, which is distinct from the calcification process in bone and other tissues.
