Summary: This study retrospectively reviewed consecutive adults with idiopathic subglottic stenosis over a 12-year period, finding that both endoscopic and open surgical approaches can successfully maintain airway patency, but multiple procedures are usually required. It is important to discuss quality-of-life outcomes with patients before deciding on a surgical management strategy.

Summary: Cricotracheal resection (CTR) is effective for refractory idiopathic subglottic stenosis (iSGS) but leads to persistent dysphonia. Voice Handicap Index (VHI) scores increased at 1 month postoperatively but decreased after 2 years, while fundamental frequency (FO) values decreased initially and then increased over time. Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice (CAPE-V) scores increased at 1 month postoperatively and returned towards baseline at 24 months after CTR.

Summary: This study investigated the etiologic spectrum of benign duodenal stenosis (BDS) and its response to endoscopic balloon dilation (EBD). The results showed that EBD was effective for treating BDS regardless of its etiology. Males were more likely to have distal duodenal involvement, and the usage of PPI was associated with clinical success.

Summary: The study successfully detected SGS and treatment response in the rabbit model using UTE-MRI, with good correlation to ETT-sizing. Balloon dilation increased CSA at SGS but did not reach baseline values. SGS did not alter dynamic motion for the trachea in this rabbit model, but tracheas were significantly eccentric post-balloon dilation.

Summary: Serial intralesional steroid injection (SILSI) is effective in improving both subjective symptoms and objective airflow parameters in patients with idiopathic subglottic stenosis (ISGS), and it also has an impact on voice changes. The research shows that SILSI is associated with improvement in subjective voice ratings in about half of patients, and the improvement correlates with improved airflow measurements.

Summary: This study found that SGS cases do not have lower diversity in adaptive immune response compared to healthy controls. Interestingly, both in health and disease, the TCR repertoire contains a restricted number of high frequency clonotypes that do not significantly overlap between individuals.

Summary: This article reviews an adverse event involving an airway balloon device and suggests interventions to prevent similar incidents. The authors urge Acclarent to redesign their device to prevent accidental airway irrigation.

Summary: The experimental results indicate that thermal damage in EBD persists until the completion of stenosis, requiring careful operation in the initial stage. The extension effect was only observed at the laceration site and later returned to a status similar to surrounding locations. Additional intervention is needed to prevent restenosis.

Summary: This scoping review examines the management of subglottic and airway stenosis during pregnancy, finding that airway dilatation is safe and effective in the second and third trimesters, resulting in optimized respiratory outcomes for the mother and safe delivery of the fetus.

Summary: Idiopathic subglottic stenosis (iSGS) is an inflammatory process that causes fibrosis and narrowing of the laryngotracheal airway. This pilot study measured candidate targets' expression in iSGS patients' subglottic mucosal surface, identifying upregulation of pro-inflammatory and pro-fibrotic pathways and suggesting CCL2 and IFNG as potential biomarkers for iSGS.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of inhaled fluticasone propionate as adjuvant medical therapy in patients with laryngotracheal stenosis after balloon dilation. The results showed that using inhaled steroids after balloon dilatation did not provide any benefit in spirometry parameters during short postoperative follow-up. Further large-scale double-blind studies with longer follow-up periods are recommended to confirm these findings.

Summary: The study identified an impact on voice-related quality of life in patients with subglottic stenosis, with breathlessness during speech potentially more significant than inability to speak.

Summary: This study investigates disease recurrence after CO2 laser excisions and balloon dilatation in patients with subglottic stenosis (SGS) and identifies potential confounding factors. The results show that CO2 laser treatment is associated with a higher risk of recurrence compared to balloon dilatation. Other risk factors include overweight, obesity, and younger age at diagnosis.

Summary: This study retrospectively reviewed 49 pediatric patients with subglottic stenosis and found that endoscopic balloon dilatation can be safe and effective in the treatment of subglottic stenosis in children. However, for patients with more severe cases (grade IV), open surgery should be considered.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize the impact of subglottic stenosis on voice-related quality of life and quantify the effect of treatment on voice outcomes. The results showed a positive correlation between the degree of improvement in airway caliber postoperatively and improvement in calculated V-RQOL scores.
