Summary: In this systematic review and meta-analysis of 12 population-based cohort studies, we found that approximately 1 in 5 patients with Crohn's disease develops perianal disease within 10 years of diagnosis. Of these, two-thirds require perianal surgery and 6% require major abdominal surgery.

Summary: Maternal perception of fetal movements during pregnancy is important, and a reduction in movements is associated with increased odds of late stillbirth. The study aimed to assess the pattern of maternal perception of fetal movement by gestation and birthweight quartile, and to analyze the association of stillbirth with perception of fetal movements.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the type and prevalence of functional and structural ear abnormalities among children with prenatal alcohol exposure and/or fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). The findings showed that the highest prevalence of functional ear abnormalities were chronic serous otitis media, abnormal auditory filtering, and unspecified conductive hearing loss, while the highest prevalence of structural ear abnormalities were microtia, railroad track ear, and misplaced ear.

Summary: Through a systematic review and meta-analysis, we identified several demographic and modifiable factors that are associated with the prognosis of streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS). Treatment with clindamycin and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) were significantly associated with mortality, but the certainty of evidence was low. Other factors such as age and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs also had some impact on prognosis, but with low certainty of evidence.

Summary: The evolution of EBM in China was described and recorded through oral history interviews with international and Chinese experts. More than 20 EBM centers have been established in China since the mid-1990s. China has contributed to EBM internationally by conducting systematic reviews, developing reporting checklists, and integrating EBM principles into Traditional Medicine, but still faces challenges such as funding shortages and limited local high-quality evidence.

Summary: The meta-analysis found that continuing metformin during contrast medium administration does not increase the risk of contrast-induced acute kidney injury, lactic acidosis, or deterioration in renal function in diabetic patients. However, the limited quality of included studies may compromise the strength of evidence provided in this analysis.

Summary: This study compared the performance of bivariate linear mixed model (LMM) and bivariate generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) in meta-analyses of diagnostic studies. The results showed that bivariate GLMM generally produced narrower confidence intervals compared to bivariate LMM, and could produce different results in specific situations.

Summary: Strongyloides stercoralis is a common intestinal helminth in tropical and subtropical regions, persisting in human hosts due to autoinfection. Transplant patients face a high risk of hyperinfection and disseminated strongyloidiasis, yet prevalence and related data in this population are limited.

Summary: This meta-analysis estimated the overall prevalence of sarcopenia in older Chinese adults. The prevalence of sarcopenia in elderly Chinese population was found to be 14%, with a higher prevalence in women compared to men (15% vs 14%). Further research is needed to address the high degree of heterogeneity and to better understand the emerging public health issue of sarcopenia in China.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the efficacy and toxicity of different plants and plant compounds against common human gastrointestinal parasites. The study found that many plants and compounds showed antiparasitic activity in vitro, but only a few plants were evaluated for toxicity. The meta-analysis showed strong evidence of the effectiveness of Lepidium virginicum L. against Entamoeba histolytica. Recommendations for future research are provided.

Summary: This study identified risk factors associated with the development of chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) in children through a systematic review and meta-analysis. The results indicate that atopy and birth weight <2500 g are associated with an increased risk of CSOM development.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the efficacy of resveratrol in treating osteoporosis (OP) animal models based on preclinical research data. The results showed that resveratrol can increase bone mineral density (BMD) and improve bone microstructure, as well as regulate calcium and phosphorus metabolism. Therefore, resveratrol has potential in the treatment of osteoporosis, but further research is needed for its clinical efficacy.

Summary: This study aimed to identify associations between extreme weather events and the immediate and delayed risks for acute otitis media (AOM)-related emergency department visits (EV). The results showed that prolonged extreme weather conditions, such as temperature, humidity, precipitation, wind speeds, and atmospheric pressure, significantly impacted the risk ratio (RR) for AOM-related EVs. These findings could improve healthcare resource allocation in similar climates and educate patients about the role of environmental factors in AOM.
