Transforming cropland into a semi-natural ecosystem is an effective approach to increase soil organic carbon (SOC) and nitrogen sequestration. However, we know little about large-scale response patterns of SOC, soil inorganic nitrogen (SIN), and their interactions over long time of ecosystem restoration. Here, we conducted a meta-analysis to examine changes in SOC, SIN, and their relationship along 50 year's ecosystem development from cropland transformation in China's 'Grain for Green' Programme. Our results showed that SOC and SIN were consistently enhanced by 57% and 35% with transformation, respectively. Similar with SOC, SIN had higher response magnitudes when cropland was restored to forests (47%) than to shrublands (36%) and grasslands (24%). Both SOC and SIN response ratios showed a quadratic relationship with precipitation. Moreover, we found a strong linear relationship (R-2 = 0.36) between SOC and SIN response ratio, with the slope indicating a 0.43% increase in SIN per 1% of increasing SOC. This SIN retention capacity (the slope) significantly increased with restoration time but reduced with precipitation, temperature, and initial SOC. Restored forest had a lower SIN retention capacity than had shrubland and grassland. Overall, this study represents the first to regionally uncover SIN retention mechanism with increasing SOC during ecosystem development. It suggests that ecosystem restoration will contribute more to relieving serious environmental problems (i.e., N leaching and N2O emission) by enhancing SIN retention in China's Grain for Green Programme.

Investigation of SnS2-rGO Sandwich Structures as Negative Electrode for Sodium-Ion and Potassium-Ion Batteries

Chengping Li, Kristina Pfeifer, Xianlin Luo, Georgian Melinte, Jinsong Wang, Zhengfu Zhang, Yingjie Zhang, Peng Dong, Angelina Sarapulova, Helmut Ehrenberg, Sonia Dsoke

Summary: Sodium-ion and potassium-ion batteries are potential alternatives to lithium-ion batteries in energy storage, with advantages of abundance and low cost of Na and K. However, the large size of Na+/K+ causes volume change of the hosting material, resulting in capacity decay. In this study, porous few-layer SnS2 nanosheets are grown on reduced graphene oxide, forming a SnS2-rGO sandwich structure. This nanostructure enables high and stable electrochemical cycling performance of SnS2-rGO. The effects of different conductive carbons and electrolyte additive on the electrochemical performance are also evaluated. This work provides guidelines for better NIBs and KIBs through optimized electrode structure, electrolyte additives, and carbon additives.

Summary: The temporal stability of ecosystem productivity is crucial for providing reliable ecosystem services in the face of global changes. While there has been extensive research on the response of above-ground net primary productivity (ANPP) stability to nitrogen (N) enrichment, the impact on below-ground net primary productivity (BNPP) stability is still unclear, hindering our understanding of ecosystem stability as a whole system.

Different patterns and drivers of fungal communities between phyllosphere and rhizosphere in alpine grasslands

Yang Li, Dashuan Tian, Junxiao Pan, Benjamin Zhou, Ruiyang Zhang, Lei Song, Jinsong Wang, Shuli Niu

Summary: Epiphytic fungi play a vital role in enhancing host plant performance, but they can also cause plant diseases. This study conducted a large-scale field survey in the Tibetan Plateau to explore the composition and structure of phyllosphere and rhizosphere fungal communities. The study found that precipitation was more important than temperature in affecting fungal alpha diversity, and climate and spatial variables had different effects on fungal community compositions between phyllosphere and rhizosphere.

Increased soluble sugar accumulation in postharvest peaches in response to different defense priming elicitors

Kaituo Wang, Changyi Lei, Meilin Tan, Jinsong Wang, Chunhong Li, Yanyu Zou

Summary: A defense priming mechanism is activated in plants only under heavy pathogenic invasion, reducing energy and material costs under low pathogen loads. In this study, the researchers discovered that the expression of PpWRKY40, a transcription factor, is increased by defense priming elicitors such as BABA, MeJA or BTH, leading to the upregulation of sucrose synthesis-related genes and increased sugar accumulation in postharvest peach fruit. Additionally, the activities of sorbitol catabolizing enzymes also increased, converting sorbitol into glucose and fructose. This defense priming mechanism improved the overall quality and antioxidant levels of the fruit.

Zhuqiu Gai, Jinsong Wang

Summary: To ensure reliable and accurate operation in a complex field environment, a dynamic seal shafting structure is designed for LSS-UAV tracking systems. This structure consists of a labyrinthine structure and a magnetic fluid seal ring to protect important equipment from erosion and oxidation. By establishing a friction torque model, the tracking accuracy of the system is improved by nearly 10 fold. Actual test results show that including friction torque compensation can effectively reduce start-up delay and speed fluctuation error, meeting the requirements for smooth and accurate tracking.

Controlling factors for soil bacterial and fungal diversity and composition vary with vegetation types in alpine grasslands

Junxiao Pan, Yifei Peng, Jinsong Wang, Dashuan Tian, Ruiyang Zhang, Yang Li, Lu Yang, Song Wang, Chen Chen, Shuli Niu

Summary: Soil microbial diversity and community composition in alpine grasslands are mainly controlled by edaphic properties, soil microclimates, plant coverage, and root biomass. The effects of these factors vary with vegetation type, with soil pH being the main determinant in alpine meadow and soil total organic carbon playing a more important role in alpine steppe. Soil moisture directly affects bacterial diversity and community composition in the alpine meadow, while indirectly affecting bacterial diversity in the alpine steppe through its positive influence on TOC. Bacterial community composition is mainly influenced by soil pH and TOC, while fungal community composition is more determined by plant coverage and root biomass.

Nitrification derived N2O emission increases but denitrification derived N2O emission decreases with N enrichment in both topsoil and subsoil

Lei Song, Junxiao Pan, Jinsong Wang, Yingjie Yan, Shuli Niu

Summary: Increasing nitrogen deposition leads to linear increases in total N2O (N2OT) and nitrification-derived N2O (N2On) emissions, but linear decreases in denitrification-derived N2O (N2Od) emissions at different soil depths. N2On emissions are positively correlated with the proportion of N2On emitted from nitrification, while N2Od emissions are positively correlated with the abundance of narG and nirS genes. These findings provide insight into the mechanisms of N2OT emissions and emphasize the importance of considering different N transformation processes in predicting N2OT emissions in the context of enhanced N deposition.
