Summary: Climate change is negatively impacting farm households in Eastern and Southern Africa, with drought being the predominant risk. Farm households have adopted various strategies to cope with climate risks, depending on their family characteristics and level of resources. Substantial differences exist among the study countries in terms of the adoption of coping strategies.

Summary: The low productivity of the agricultural sector contributes to the socio-economic struggles in Africa. Producing mycelium composites from agricultural waste can increase farmers' income and incentivize agricultural productivity, as well as create employment opportunities, especially for women and the youth. Mycelium composites can also address environmental and health challenges in Africa.

Summary: Short-cycle higher education programs (SCPs) play a crucial role in skill development and expanding higher education. However, their quality varies greatly within and between countries. This study examines the relationship between program practices and inputs (quality determinants) and student outcomes. The findings show that specific quality determinants, such as teaching numerical competencies and providing job market information, can improve academic and labor market outcomes. These results have implications for designing and replicating high-quality SCPs, regulating them, and developing information systems.

Summary: This study examines the inclusion of cancer survivorship-related strategies and objectives in national cancer control plans (NCCPs) of African countries. Results show that all NCCPs include survivorship in their plans, with 202 survivorship-related strategies identified. However, there is a need to extend survivorship objectives beyond palliative care and include measurable indicators.

Summary: Technology development is crucial in the petroleum industry, especially in countries where all oil activities are supervised by the National Oil Company. This requires careful planning and coordination at different levels of the industry to ensure success. The interaction between various factors and stakeholders at different levels of the industry necessitates alignment. This study explores technology planning using roadmapping and quality function deployment techniques and provides a model for ensuring alignment in technology plans, with the Iranian oil industry as a case study.

Summary: Automatic detection and classification of animal sounds have various applications in biodiversity monitoring and animal behavior. Recent advancements in deep learning have led to strong results in automatic classification. However, bioacoustics encompasses a wide range of small-scale tasks with diverse data characteristics and limited labeled training data. This work introduces a few-shot learning approach for bioacoustic sound event detection and presents open datasets and a public contest to evaluate the performance. The analysis shows that prototypical networks and high time resolution capabilities are effective in this challenge, and few-shot sound event detection outperforms traditional signal processing methods in fine-grained bioacoustic recognition tasks.

Summary: This study presents data on teacher earnings from 15 African countries, revealing that teacher monthly earnings are lower in some countries but hourly earnings are relatively higher. Teachers have advantages in non-pecuniary benefits compared to other workers, and they also work fewer hours. The study also highlights other characteristics of the teacher labor force and variations in teacher contracts.

Summary: This study found that there is a lack of global comprehensiveness in national cancer control plans (NCCPs), particularly in policies related to financial hardships and access to cancer medicines. Specification of budget allocations, policy of protection from catastrophic health expenditure, and national treatment guidelines play a role in ensuring consistent policies on essential cancer medicines.

Summary: The gut microbiota may influence breast cancer development by regulating hormonal, metabolic and immunologic pathways. Associations between fecal bacteria and both breast cancer and nonmalignant breast disease were studied in Ghana, with findings indicating strong and similar correlations with both conditions. This suggests potential microbial mechanisms of breast disease.

Summary: The study found that participants over the age of 75, with a high school education or less, from minority ethnicities, with an income less than $25,000, and with poor reading ability had lower levels of oral health knowledge. It is essential to develop communication strategies to provide equal opportunities for all ethnic groups in educating older adults on oral health.
