Summary: The Asia-Pacific International Center of Excellence in Malaria Research (ICEMR) is using various research approaches to gain a comprehensive understanding of malaria transmission in Papua New Guinea and Cambodia. They have identified the challenges of forest-based transmission of malaria in Cambodia and the complex interactions between hosts, vectors, and parasites in Papua New Guinea.

Summary: Half of all pregnancies at risk of malaria occur in the Asia-Pacific region, where the co-existence of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax is common. Malaria control in pregnancy faces challenges due to high-grade antimalarial resistance and the need for more sensitive diagnostic tests. A more systematic approach is needed to prevent malaria in pregnancy in the Asia-Pacific region.

Summary: The association between malaria incidence and climatic factors is controversial, hindering the progress of the Global Malaria Program. This study evaluated the relationship across all malaria endemic countries in Africa and the Asia-Pacific region. Using two decades of data, the study found heterogeneity in malaria incidence and reductions in the disease burden in Asia-Pacific countries, with exceptions in Africa. The study also identified positive associations between malaria incidence, minimum temperature, and precipitation in African countries, while several Asia-Pacific countries showed negative effects of precipitation.

Summary: Nutrition and weight gain during pregnancy have an impact on the long-term health of offspring. Clinical practice guidelines on gestational weight gain and maternal nutrition in the Asia-Pacific region are generally of poor quality and show significant variability in recommendations, highlighting the need for improvement to ensure appropriate advice for pregnant women.

Summary: The global burden of deaths caused by liver failure is substantial. The Asia-Pacific region accounted for more than half of the global population and a significant proportion of liver disease deaths in 2015. The causes of liver failure vary in different countries and include viruses, drugs, toxins, and autoimmune reactions. Rising alcohol misuse and metabolic syndrome pose a concern. Accurate estimates of the burden of liver failure are critical for determining clinical, research, and policy priorities.

Summary: This paper expands the existing literature on herding behavior in commodity markets by focusing on major economies in the Asia-Pacific region. The study shows that herding behavior is heterogeneous across Asian economies and varies under different market and liquidity conditions. There is evidence of up/down market herding asymmetry, with herding being more pronounced during periods of high volatility. Notably, herding behavior varies with time and appears to be influenced by volatility.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive synthesis of the burden, risk factors, and challenges of asthma management in developing countries, with a specific focus on the Asia-Pacific Region. The study highlights the higher burden of asthma in low and low-middle-income countries in the region compared to high-income countries. The challenges include inequitable distribution of healthcare, lack of advanced diagnostic measures, unavailability and unaffordability of novel therapeutics, cultural beliefs and practices, and diverse disease phenotypes.

Summary: Indoor radon is a major health hazard and a leading cause of lung cancer. Radon research in Asia has increased due to growing awareness of its harm. Analysis of literature data revealed that certain regions in Asia-Oceania have little indoor radon problems due to climate and low Rn ground. Countries have their own approaches and techniques, though measurement techniques are compared through intercomparison exercises. Certain countries in seismically active zones, like India and Taiwan, lead in radon research, along with Italy. The number of indoor radon measurements per million inhabitants increases with higher human development index (HDI).

Summary: The Asia-Pacific region, with a population of 4.3 billion and rapidly aging population, faces increasing demand for eye care. Despite significant achievements in the past decades, challenges lie ahead, including the rising number of blind people and high prevalence of blinding eye diseases. Additionally, the uneven distribution of ophthalmic resources poses a significant challenge for the region.

Summary: This study analyzed the funders and funding sources supporting research on infectious diseases in the Asia-Pacific region. The findings show that there are numerous COVID-19 research funders and funding sources in the region, but they are concentrated in a few countries. Additionally, there is limited research involving Asia-Pacific countries in the funded COVID-19 projects, with the majority of funding focused on social sciences and less emphasis on research priorities such as animal and environmental health and ethics considerations.

Summary: This study examines the impact of bank risk, capital holdings, and regulatory quality on the determination of bank non-interest income and net interest income. The findings suggest that changes in non-interest income have a negligible effect on net interest income, while increased non-interest income is associated with higher capital holdings and worsening loan quality.

Summary: This study compared adverse pregnancy outcomes in the first trimester of pregnancy after artemisinin-based treatment (ABT) versus non-ABTs. The results showed no evidence of embryotoxicity or teratogenicity associated with ABT during the first trimester. Artemether-lumefantrine was found to be the preferred treatment for uncomplicated P falciparum malaria in the first trimester, with fewer adverse pregnancy outcomes compared to quinine.

Summary: This article reviews the latest developments in the immunogenicity and pathogenesis of malaria, with a focus on the leading malaria killer, Plasmodium falciparum. Pathogenic factors include parasite-derived toxins and variant surface antigens that cause sequestration in the deep vasculature. The host response to these toxins and antigens plays a crucial role in determining disease severity.
