The Incidence and Risk Factors for Metachronous Gastric Cancer in the Remnant Stomach after Gastric Cancer Surgery

Yonghoon Choi, Nayoung Kim, Hyuk Yoon, Cheol Min Shin, Young Soo Park, Dong Ho Lee, Young Suk Park, Sang-Hoon Ahn, Yun-Suhk Suh, Do Joong Park, Hyung Ho Kim

Summary: This study analyzed the incidence and risk factors of metachronous gastric cancer (GC) in patients who had undergone partial gastrectomy. The results showed that older age and the surgical method used (proximal gastrectomy or pylorus-preserving gastrectomy) were related risk factors for metachronous GC. Regular and careful follow-up with endoscopy should be performed in patients who have undergone gastric partial resection, especially in males, those with intestinal type histology, and those aged 60 years and older.

Effects of Reproductive Factors on Lauren Intestinal-Type Gastric Cancers in Females: A Multicenter Retrospective Study in South Korea

Yoon Ju Jung, Hee Jin Kim, Cho Hyun Park, Seun Ja Park, Nayoung Kim

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of reproductive factors on gastric cancer (GC) in females. The results showed that there were no significant differences in the proportion of intestinal-type GCs between females >= 20 years postmenopause and males. Furthermore, age and parity >= 3 were positively associated with an increased risk of intestinal-type GCs in postmenopausal females, while long fertility duration was positively associated with an increased risk of intestinal-type GCs in premenopausal females.

Effect of Clostridium butyricum on High-Fat Diet-Induced Intestinal Inflammation and Production of Short-Chain Fatty Acids

Yonghoon Choi, Soo In Choi, Nayoung Kim, Ryoung Hee Nam, Jae Young Jang, Hee Young Na, Cheol Min Shin, Dong Ho Lee, Huitae Min, Yeon-Ran Kim, Yeong-Jae Seok

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the response of rat colon to a high-fat diet (HFD) and the effect of Clostridium butyricum on HFD-induced intestinal inflammation and production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) according to sex. The results showed that HFD significantly increased inflammation scores and fat proportions. Clostridium butyricum improved HFD-induced colonic inflammation, increased SCFA production, and enhanced the expression of tight junction proteins. These effects were more pronounced in male rats, showing a sex difference.

The Clinicopathological Features of Mixed Carcinoma in 7,215 Patients with Gastric Cancer in a Tertiary Hospital in South Korea

Hyeong Ho Jo, Nayoung Kim, Hyeon Jeong Oh, Du Hyun Song, Yonghoon Choi, Jaehyung Park, Jongchan Lee, Hyuk Yoon, Cheol Min Shin, Young Soo Park, Dong Ho Lee, Hye Seung Lee, Young Suk Park, Sang-Hoon Ahn, Yun-Suhk Suh, Do Joong Park, Hyung Ho Kim, Ji-Won Kim, Jin Won Kim, Keun-Wook Lee, Won Chang, Ji Hoon Park, Yoon Jin Lee, Kyoung Ho Lee, Young Hoon Kim, Soyeon Ahn

Summary: This study examined the proportion and characteristics of mixed carcinoma in gastric cancer patients and found that mixed carcinoma is associated with lymph node metastasis. It is more common to see submucosal invasion in early gastric cancer, but less likely to have venous invasion and distant metastasis in advanced gastric cancer.

Rehabilitation Program for Improved Musculoskeletal Pain in Gastrointestinal Endoscopists: Multicenter Prospective Cohort Study

Su Youn Nam, Kwangwoo Nam, Ki-Nam Shim, Seoyon Yang, Chung Hyun Tae, Junwoo Jo, Nayoung Kim, Seon Mi Park, Young Sook Park, Seon Ja Park, Sung-Ae Jung

Summary: This study aimed to develop a rehabilitation program for musculoskeletal pain in gastrointestinal endoscopists and determine its usefulness. A multicenter cohort study was conducted with 118 participants, and it was found that 94% of them reported musculoskeletal pain at the beginning. The follow-up surveys revealed that musculoskeletal pain was associated with equipment/posture performance. Conclusion: Our rehabilitation program is effective and satisfactory in improving musculoskeletal pain in gastrointestinal endoscopists.

Sex/gender differences in gastrointestinal endoscopy from the perspective of patients and gastroenterologists

Nayoung Kim

Summary: The sex/gender of gastroenterologists has an impact on patients' satisfaction, compliance, and clinical outcomes. Female gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopist-patient gender concordance improves health-related outcomes, indicating the need for increased number of female GI endoscopists. While the number of women in the field of gastroenterology is increasing, it is not sufficient to meet the gender preferences of female patients. Gastroenterologists, particularly male endoscopists, are at a high risk of endoscopy-related injuries, with different distribution of injuries between males and females.

Sex Difference of Colon Adenoma Pathway and Colorectal Carcinogenesis

Yonghoon Choi, Nayoung Kim

Summary: Colorectal cancer is a common cancer that affects both men and women, but there are significant sex differences. Men have a higher risk and earlier onset of CRC, suggesting a protective role of estrogen. Female patients are more likely to develop aggressive right-sided colon cancer. There are differences in carcinogenic mechanisms between left and right CRC, with sex-based biological and sociocultural factors playing a role.
