Summary: There are significant differences in the coverage and scope of global Health Information Systems (HIS) for kidney disease. KRT registries are available in almost all high-income countries, but rare in low-income countries. Registries for non-dialysis CKD or AKI are also rare. In high-income countries, registries tend to be national, while in low-income countries they often operate at a local or regional level.

TB in paediatric kidney transplant recipients - A single-centre experience

Privilage D. Makanda-Charambira, Peter Nourse, Valerie A. Luyckx, Ashton Coetzee, Mignon McCulloch

Summary: In this study, 20 pediatric kidney transplant recipients were diagnosed with TB, with more than half occurring within the first year post-transplant. The main presentation was pulmonary TB, with common symptoms being fever, weight loss, and cough. INH prophylaxis was found to be protective against the development of TB, and both graft and patient survival were 100% upon completion of TB treatment.

Armed conflicts and kidney patients: a consensus statement from the Renal Disaster Relief Task Force of the ERA

Summary: During conflicts, people with kidney disease may face additional threats due to medical and logistical challenges. Acute kidney injury and treatment interruptions can worsen kidney function, and limitations in dialysis and availability of immunosuppressive medications increase the risk of complications. Local preparedness, adjustments in treatment, telemedicine support, and referrals to higher-level hospitals are important measures to address these challenges.

Challenges to the right to health in sub-Saharan Africa: reflections on inequities in access to dialysis for patients with end-stage kidney failure

James Tataw Ashu, Jackline Mwangi, Supriya Subramani, Daniel Kaseje, Gloria Ashuntantang, Valerie A. Luyckx

Summary: Realizing the right to health in resource-limited settings like sub-Saharan Africa is challenging, as illustrated by the example of dialysis in this paper. Limited resources and high demand for expensive care create inequities in access to healthcare. Recognizing the right to health includes protecting health through prevention, providing universal health coverage, and ensuring equitable access to expensive care. This process requires good governance, transparency, and commitment to progress.

Summary: Patients with advanced CKD or KFRT were prioritized for COVID-19 vaccination in most countries, but there were significant barriers and variations in access and success, with high-income countries having the most opportunities for vaccination.

Lessons learned during the war in Ukraine: a report from the Renal Disaster Relief Task Force of the ERA

Serhan Tuglular, Valerie Luyckx, Raymond Vanholder, Andrej Skoberne, Andrzej Wiecek, Ionut Nistor, Ewa Pawlowicz-Szlarska, Rukshana Shroff, Dmytro Ivanov, Kai-Uwe Eckardt, Edita Noruisiene, Daniel Gallego, Olena Loboda, Mehmet S. Sever

Summary: People living with kidney disease are highly vulnerable during natural or man-made disasters, particularly in war zones. The ongoing war in Ukraine highlights the importance of preparedness and support for this group. The European Renal Association has established a task force to help those with kidney disease in Ukraine, and this report summarizes the challenges faced and actions taken. The experience gained from this initiative can be used to improve preparedness and mitigate the effects of armed conflicts on the kidney community globally.

Impact of persistent conflict and destabilizing events on dialysis care

Sami Alasfar, Ephrem Berhe, Sabine Karam, Valerie Luyckx

Summary: Among global destabilizing events, natural disasters tend to dominate the attention while prolonged conflicts and economic crises are overlooked. Low- and middle-income countries are disproportionately impacted and face weakened health systems as a result. Collaboration is urgently needed to ensure equitable and sustainable dialysis care during such crises.

Sex and gender differences in chronic kidney disease and access to care around the globe

Guillermo Garcia Garcia, Arpana Iyengar, Francois Kaze, Ciara Kierans, Cesar Padilla-Altamira, Valerie A. Luyckx

Summary: The difference between sex and gender is most evident in vulnerable settings. Women are more prone to chronic kidney disease, while men have higher rates of end-stage kidney failure and kidney replacement therapy. These differences may be a result of a combination of physiological and social/structural risk factors. The distribution of risk factors such as hypertension and obesity varies between men and women globally, which may impact disease risk differently. Gender-related inequities, both social and structural, continue to exist worldwide. More women live in poverty, receive less education, and have less autonomy in healthcare decision-making, while men may face higher risks of injury, occupational exposures, and limited access to screening, prevention, and primary care.
