Investing in disaster relief and recovery: A reactive approach of disaster management in Pakistan

Summary: Pakistan is making efforts to shift from response-based reactive disaster management to a proactive approach focused on mitigation and preparedness. This study examines the financing of disaster management in pre and post-disaster phases from 2013 to 2019, showing an increase in investments in pre-disaster interventions by both government and donor agencies. Overall, a paradigm shift towards a proactive approach is observed in the province.

The findings support future modifications to screening guidelines for eoCRC in Canada and further research on the impact, cost-effectiveness, and risk prediction of targeted screening in this group.

Gendered experience of disaster: Women's account of evacuation, relief and recovery in Nepal

Asymmetrical power relationships in disaster reduction remain the key barrier to sustainable recovery: Neoliberalism and Nepal's post-earthquake recovery experiences

Summary: Referring to recent scholarly discussions, this paper demonstrates how the implementation of neoliberal governance principles has reinforced asymmetric power relationships between the state, international agencies, and citizens, hindering sustainable recovery after the 2015 Nepal earthquake. The recovery policy predominantly favors the interests of international donors and NGOs rather than local communities, resulting in the disempowerment of local communities, lack of long-term commitment to recovery, and commodification of the recovery process. To achieve sustainable recovery, post-disaster interventions should prioritize social inclusivity, meaningful engagement of affected communities, and enable social learning and sustainability transformation as integral components of community resilience-building strategy.

Associations between hurricane exposure, food insecurity, and microfinance; a cross-sectional study in Haiti

Summary: This study found that participants severely impacted by Hurricane were more likely to experience poor dietary diversity and household hunger compared to less severely impacted participants. However, these associations became insignificant for those who received their first microfinance loan before the hurricane. This suggests that natural disasters like hurricanes are associated with long-term food insecurity at individual and household levels, and that microfinance programs may improve post-disaster food security in the long term.

A deep learning-based electrocardiogram risk score for long term cardiovascular death and disease

Summary: It has been found that a deep convolutional neural network can accurately predict long term cardiovascular risk based on resting electrocardiogram (ECG) information. The developed Stanford Estimator of Electrocardiogram Risk (SEER) demonstrates high predictive accuracy when evaluated independently at different medical centers. SEER, when used alongside other risk tools, has the potential to greatly improve cardiovascular risk stratification and aid in medical decision making.

Does disaster knowledge affect residents' choice of disaster avoidance behavior in different time periods? Evidence from China's earthquake-hit areas

Summary: Based on a survey of 327 peasant households in the Wenchuan and Lushan earthquakes in China, this study examines the impact of disaster knowledge on residents' disaster avoidance behavior. The results show that residents generally have strong disaster knowledge, but their awareness of disaster preparedness is poor. The study also finds that residents with stronger disaster knowledge are more likely to take appropriate disaster avoidance actions.

KRT registries are available in almost all high-income countries, but rare in low-income countries. Registries for non-dialysis CKD or AKI are also rare. In high-income countries, registries tend to be national, while in low-income countries they often operate at a local or regional level.

TB in paediatric kidney transplant recipients - A single-centre experience

Summary: In this study, 20 pediatric kidney transplant recipients were diagnosed with TB, with more than half occurring within the first year post-transplant. The main presentation was pulmonary TB, with common symptoms being fever, weight loss, and cough. INH prophylaxis was found to be protective against the development of TB, and both graft and patient survival were 100% upon completion of TB treatment.

Local preparedness, adjustments in treatment, telemedicine support, and referrals to higher-level hospitals are important measures to address these challenges.

Recognizing the right to health includes protecting health through prevention, providing universal health coverage, and ensuring equitable access to expensive care. This process requires good governance, transparency, and commitment to progress.

The European Renal Association has established a task force to help those with kidney disease in Ukraine, and this report summarizes the challenges faced and actions taken. The experience gained from this initiative can be used to improve preparedness and mitigate the effects of armed conflicts on the kidney community globally.

Sex and gender differences in chronic kidney disease and access to care around the globe

Summary: The difference between sex and gender is most evident in vulnerable settings. Women are more prone to chronic kidney disease, while men have higher rates of end-stage kidney failure and kidney replacement therapy. These differences may be a result of a combination of physiological and social/structural risk factors. The distribution of risk factors such as hypertension and obesity varies between men and women globally, which may impact disease risk differently. Gender-related inequities, both social and structural, continue to exist worldwide. More women live in poverty, receive less education, and have less autonomy in healthcare decision-making, while men may face higher risks of injury, occupational exposures, and limited access to screening, prevention, and primary care.
