Success factors of global goal-setting for sustainable development: Learning from the millennium development goals

Summary: The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were a crucial foundation for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A comprehensive review of 316 articles published between 2009 and 2018 identifies six factors that facilitated or impeded MDG implementation. The analysis highlights the significance of path dependencies and demonstrates that MDGs only brought about changes in countries with sufficient resources, administrative capacity, economic development, and external donor support. National ownership and NGO pressure strengthened MDG implementation efforts, indicating that globally agreed goals do not easily trickle down to the national level. This article provides forward-looking insights and lessons for the current implementation of the SDGs in developing countries.

Special Needs, Special Efforts: Learners With Intellectual Disabilities and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Summary: This article examines the responsiveness of academic faculty in higher education institutions to the special learning needs of individuals with intellectual disabilities. It finds that while the faculty showed awareness of the need to make pedagogical adjustments, they did not adapt their teaching-learning process to address the sustainable development goals or challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. In comparison, the institutions themselves were more responsive to these new opportunities and threats.

Nature's contributions to people and the Sustainable Development Goals in Nepal

Summary: The study in Nepal found that despite the positive contribution of Nature's contributions to people (NCPs) towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the NCPs are declining due to direct drivers like land-use change, over-exploitation, and climate change. Certain development interventions such as community forestry and protected areas have been successful in increasing the supply of NCPs. Integration of Indigenous knowledge and local practices has also been effective in improving the provision of NCPs and enhancing livelihoods at local scales.

Assessing cancer in people with profound and multiple disabilities

However, PMD patients are at increased risk for certain cancers associated with underlying medical conditions. Early detection and monitoring of cancers in PMD population is crucial for better therapeutic outcomes.

Development of an Intelligent Personal Assistant System Based on IoT for People with Disabilities

Summary: Approximately 15% of the world's population has disabilities and faces challenges in interacting with home appliances. Existing solutions using command templates fail to understand unstructured commands, and integrating intelligent personal assistant systems with control circuits requires internet connectivity. This research proposes the IRON system, integrated with IoT, to enable disabled individuals to control devices with structured and unstructured voice commands. The system utilizes natural language processing techniques and logistic regression for command classification and control. The simulation results demonstrate accurate device name recognition and efficient command classification within approximately 30 s.

Interpersonal violence experienced by people with communication disabilities in Iraq: Sustainable Development Goals 16 and 5

Summary: This study analyzes interpersonal identity-based violence experienced by persons with communication disabilities in Iraq and the reported barriers to accessing supports. The use of communication accessible data collection tools is discussed as a means of enabling an inclusive response for multiple marginalized groups in relation to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 16 and 5. The results show that individuals with communication disabilities reported similar levels of interpersonal violence compared to those with other types of disabilities, characterized by high rates of deprivation and physical violence. Many participants did not seek support, but those who did were most likely to turn to family members or friends, followed by consulting legal services. Barriers to accessing support varied, with lack of transport being the most commonly reported.

Negotiating work-based travel for people with disabilities

Summary: This Australian study explored how staff with disabilities in the higher education sector handled their work-related travel responsibilities, revealing the challenges they face such as feeling restricted by current systems and practices and having to go above and beyond their colleagues' expectations. The findings contribute to informing employers about the unspoken difficulties employees with disabilities encounter when meeting work-based travel expectations and offer insights on how the travel and hospitality industry can be more inclusive for employees traveling for work purposes.
