Summary: Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) are emerging as a prominent platform for disease detection in developing countries. However, their detection limits are inadequate and require test results to be read within a specific time interval for accuracy. This paper presents an on-chip mass spectrometry (MS) detection strategy for immunoassays performed on paper substrates and demonstrates its feasibility in malaria antigen detection.

Summary: In this study, a optically transparent metamaterial absorber (OTMMA) based electromagnetic interference shielding window is proposed, with broadband microwave absorption and ultrahigh optical transmittance. The window design enables high absorption rates across a wide frequency range, while being insensitive to incident angle and polarization state. The measured shielding effectiveness and optical transmittance demonstrate the potential of this window for various applications.

Summary: Paper-based microfluidic devices are commonly used for multistep chemical or biological sensing, but their design has traditionally relied on trial and error experiments. In this study, a computational design method was successfully demonstrated for a two-dimensional paper network (2DPN) that delivers three fluids to a test zone without the need for experimental trial and error. This new approach paves the way for the development of a computational design toolbox for paper microfluidic networks.

Summary: This study reports the design and fabrication of low-cost, rapid, paper-based analytical devices (mu PAD) for the detection of a specific biomarker-rPfLDH for malaria. The mu PAD demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity in detecting rPfLDH in buffered solutions and spiked serum and blood samples, indicating its potential as a diagnostic tool for malaria.

Summary: This study presents an optimal machine learning model for automated malaria parasite detection and classification using blood smear images. The model involves pre-processing stages, feature extraction using Local Derivative Radial Patterns, and classification using random forest. Additionally, the particle swarm optimization algorithm is utilized to optimize the parameters of the random forest model. Experimental results demonstrate the improved performance of the proposed model in malaria parasite detection.

Summary: Automated deep learning has shown promise in AI, but its applications in clinical medicine are limited. In this study, we used an open-source automated deep learning framework called Autokeras to detect malaria parasites in smear blood images. Autokeras can identify the optimal neural network for classification without prior knowledge from deep learning. Compared to traditional deep neural network methods, our proposed approach achieved superior results in analyzing a dataset of 27,558 blood smear images. The evaluation results showed high efficiency and impressive accuracy of 95.6%, outperforming previous competitive models.
