Summary: This study investigated the relationship between mindfulness, self-defeatist beliefs, and negative symptoms in schizophrenia patients. The results showed that self-defeatist beliefs were significantly related to certain aspects of negative symptoms. Mindfulness was found to have an effect on negative symptoms, but no moderating effect was observed.

Summary: Mathematics-intensive fields like physics and math face high student dropout rates in postsecondary education. Motivational decline after the transition to postsecondary education greatly contributes to students' difficulties in academic achievements and decisions to leave these fields. Through examining the changes in students' expected success and different task values, we found that these motivational factors predict academic success and course dropout, with increasing overlap and convergence over time. Moreover, there is a significant shift in the importance of expectancies and values after the transition to postsecondary education, indicating a critical period for interventions. Pre-existing achievement, socioeconomic, and gender differences lose some of their unique predictive power toward the midpoint of the semester.

Summary: The study found that lower self-esteem and specific dysfunctional beliefs may precede symptoms of depression in patients with bipolar disorder. Over time, dependency-related dysfunctional beliefs and lower self-esteem were consistently associated with more severe symptoms of depression.

Summary: Mitochondria, evolved from primordial purple nonsulfur bacteria, enhance energy production through endosymbiosis. However, this process also generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can have both positive and negative impacts on the host. Recent studies have shown that neuropsychiatric disorders involve inflammation and oxidative stress, affecting cognitive processes and behavior.

Summary: Previous studies have shown the upregulation of SELENBP1 in the prefrontal cortex of schizophrenia patients, but no causal connection has been established. This study provides evidence linking the upregulation of SELENBP1 with negative symptoms of schizophrenia in mice. The results suggest that increased SELENBP1 levels in the prefrontal cortex lead to social withdrawal and other negative behaviors associated with schizophrenia.

Summary: This study examines the impact of the hope-motivation recovery pathway and the deficit-oriented cognitive pathway on the social functioning and quality of life of individuals with schizophrenia. It finds that addressing dysfunctional beliefs and instilling hope and successful experiences have differential positive effects on recovery, ultimately leading to improved social functioning and quality of life.

Summary: The negative symptoms of schizophrenia severely limit daily functioning, and there are currently no FDA-approved treatments for them. 3,4-Methylenedioxy methamphetamine (MDMA) has potential as a novel therapeutic due to its ability to enhance social interactions, generate empathy, and induce a state of metaplasticity in the brain. This review provides a rationale for the use of MDMA in the treatment of negative symptoms by reviewing the literature on negative symptoms, their treatment, MDMA, and MDMA-assisted therapy.

Summary: This study compared effort allocation capacity between patients with recent-onset schizophrenia and healthy controls, and investigated the association of effort allocation capacity with negative symptoms within the schizophrenia group. The results showed that patients with schizophrenia exhibited a general reduction in effort allocation capacity and made inefficient choices. The effects of negative symptoms on effort expenditure were more pronounced when the rewarding stimulus was vague.

Summary: The treatment of negative symptoms in schizophrenia remains a challenge, with growing evidence on the effects of biological and psychosocial interventions. The distinction between primary and secondary negative symptoms is crucial for treatment selection, yet limited evidence is available. Good clinical practice is recommended for addressing secondary negative symptoms.

Summary: The negative symptoms of schizophrenia, such as avolition, anhedonia, social withdrawal, and emotional disorders, have a negative impact on patients' quality of life and functioning. It is important to differentiate between primary and secondary negative symptoms in order to choose the correct therapeutic strategy. Furthermore, the longitudinal trajectories of primary and secondary negative symptoms in different stages of schizophrenia are important additional factors for discrimination.

Summary: This study aimed to identify factors that contribute significantly to real-world functioning in patients with schizophrenia, and ultimately found that 66.0% of the variance was explained. The results indicate that certain psychopathological symptoms, functional abilities, and cognitive functions are closely related to patients' real-world functioning.

Summary: Negative symptoms in schizophrenia are critical but poorly understood, and while clinician ratings and biobehavioral data are both used for assessment, they are only moderately related due to differences in resolution. Resolving this discrepancy is crucial for better understanding and treating negative symptoms.

Summary: Negative symptoms in patients with schizophrenia are highly prevalent and debilitating. This study found that impaired model-free reward prediction influence is a mechanism for negative symptoms in schizophrenia, and it is associated with reduced associative striatum dopamine and executive dysfunction.

Summary: Empathy, the ability to understand and share others' emotions, consists of cognitive and affective components. Research shows that in adolescents, cognitive empathy is associated with the default mode and frontoparietal networks, while affective empathy is related to the salience network. Cognitive empathy develops more slowly in adolescents compared to adults, with significant differences between these groups in terms of brain networks.

Summary: This pilot study demonstrates that tailoring a metacognitive intervention to improve social functioning and symptoms for schizophrenia is feasible and acceptable. Using real-world interactions in therapy sessions led to reduced negative metacognitive beliefs and disorganized symptoms, showing potential for impacting clinical practice by personalizing treatment to individual variations in environment and lifestyle.

Summary: Advances in artificial intelligence and natural language processing have improved the efficiency of assessing speech content and organization in schizophrenia. However, there is little research on the psychometrics of these approaches. This study examined the reliability of two common assessments, Linguistic Inquiry Word Count (LIWC) and Coh-Metrix, and found fair to good reliability for speech organization measures. The study also highlighted the variation in speech indices based on demographic factors, emphasizing the need to design measures that are valid across different demographic groups.
