Schizophrenia is associated with the inflammation-related pathways, including aberrant cytokines levels. In this study, we examined the association of serum IL-3 levels with psychopahological symtoms in chronic schizophrenia. Serum IL-3 levels were assessed in 42 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia and compared to 43 healthy control subjects matched for age and gender. Schizophrenia symptomatology was assessed with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), and serum IL-3 levels were measured by sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Our results showed that IL-3 levels were significantly increased in patients with chronic schizophrenia compared to healthy control subjects. Correlation analysis revealed a significant positive correlation between the IL-3 levels and the PANSS general subscore. Moreover, IL-3 levels were significantly positively correlated with depressive subscore. Our results suggested that IL-3 related pathway is associated with psychopathology of schizophrenia patients. Leilei Wang, Yi Yin, Yanfang Zhou, Junchao Huang, Ping Zhang, Song Chen, Hongzhen Fan, Yimin Cui, Xingguang Luo, Shuping Tan, Zhiren Wang, Chiang-Shan R. Li, Baopeng Tian, Li Tian, L. Elliot Hong, Yunlong Tan

Summary: The study found that patients with first-episode schizophrenia experienced more severe childhood trauma and had lower serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels compared to healthy controls. Emotional abuse, emotional neglect, and Childhood Trauma Questionnaire total score were positively associated with positive, general psychopathological subscores, and total scores in patients, while emotional neglect was positively associated with positive symptoms. Additionally, emotional neglect and Childhood Trauma Questionnaire total score were negatively correlated with serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels.

Serum kynurenine metabolites might not be associated with risk factors of treatment-resistant schizophrenia

Junchao Huang, Ping Zhang, Yanfang Zhou, Jinghui Tong, Yimin Cui, Shuping Tan, Zhiren Wang, Fude Yang, Peter Kochunov, Baopeng Tian, Li Tian, L. Elliot Hong, Yunlong Tan

Summary: The study revealed differences in TRP pathway metabolites between patients with TRS and NTRS, with the 5-HT/TRP ratio being associated with clinical symptoms and cognitive performance in TRS patients. This suggests a potential link between an upregulated 5-HT biosynthetic pathway and treatment-resistant schizophrenia, potentially leading to new pharmacological approaches for TRS.

Childhood trauma and cognitive deficits in patients with schizophrenia: mediation by orbitofrontal cortex H-shaped sulci volume

Leilei Wang, Yi Yin, Wei Feng, Yanfang Zhou, Junchao Huang, Ping Zhang, Song Chen, Hongzhen Fan, Yimin Cui, Xingguang Luo, Shuping Tan, Zhiren Wang, Baopeng Tian, Li Tian, Chiang-Shan R. Li, Yunlong Tan

Summary: The study found that childhood trauma in patients with first-episode schizophrenia is associated with smaller left OFC H-shaped sulci volumes and worse cognitive function. This suggests that childhood trauma may contribute to cognitive deficits in these patients by affecting OFC structure.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the role of monocytic subsets and their specific signature genes in regulating cerebral cortical thickness and cognitive functions in first-episode schizophrenia patients. The study found significant changes in expressions of monocytic signature genes, particularly for intermediate and nonclassical subsets. The findings also showed reduced cortical thicknesses and weaker intra-relationships between monocytic genes and cortices in patients, compared to healthy controls. Interestingly, the study revealed a reversed association between monocytic genes and cortical thicknesses and cognition in patients.

Enhanced Cognition and Neurogenesis in miR-146b Deficient Mice

Keerthana Chithanathan, Kelli Somelar, Monika Jurgenson, Tamara Zarkovskaja, Kapilraj Periyasamy, Ling Yan, Nathaniel Magilnick, Mark P. Boldin, Ana Rebane, Li Tian, Alexander Zharkovsky

Summary: This study found that miR-146b is abundantly expressed in neuronal cells and miR-146a is mainly expressed in microglia and astroglia. miR-146b deficiency leads to anxiety-like behaviors and enhanced cognition, as well as an increase in the number of neurons and a decrease in the abundance of astroglia. Furthermore, it was discovered that the deficiency of miR-146b is associated with elevated expression of the gene Gdnf in the hippocampus.

Linlin Sun, Nan Li, Ligang Zhang, Jingxu Chen

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the role of Elastography point quantification (ElastPQ) in the quantitative assessment of fatty liver disease in mental disorder patients and provide a noninvasive detection method for non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFLD) caused by atypical antipsychotics drugs (AAPDs). A total of 168 mental disorder patients treated with AAPDs and 58 healthy volunteers were included in the study. All subjects underwent ultrasound and ElastPQ tests, and the basic data of the patients were analyzed. The results showed that BMI, liver function, and ElastPQ value were significantly higher in the patient group compared to the healthy volunteers. The value of ElastPQ increased with treatment prolongation, and Olanzapine had a considerable influence on liver stiffness.
