Summary: This study aimed to explore the variation of anthropometric measures of obesity with age among African American adults. The results showed that among middle-aged African American adults, all four anthropometric measures of obesity increased with ageing. However, among elderly African American adults, only waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) continued to increase with age. WHR may be a better indicator for monitoring obesity in older African American adults.

Summary: The study found that longer exposure to adversity across the lifecourse was associated with poorer cognitive function in older age, with economic adversity having a stronger impact. Furthermore, mental health was found to mediate the relationship between adversity and cognitive function, suggesting that improving mental health in older adults could potentially mitigate the negative effects of adversities on cognitive performance.

Summary: This study in Iran, a middle-income country undergoing rapid economic transition, demonstrates the associations between multimorbidity and mortality as well as hospitalization. The findings indicate that multimorbidity is associated with an increased risk of mortality and higher rates of hospitalization. These long-term effects of multimorbidity are consistent with those seen in high-income countries.

Summary: This study explores the transitions of different blood pressure states among the Chinese elderly population, finding that increasing age, BMI, and glucose are critical risk factors for developing hypertension. The derived transition probabilities and sojourn time provide important references for targeted interventions.

Summary: This study found that decline in muscle strength with age may contribute to increased social isolation in older adults. However, decrease in grip strength was only associated with modestly increased loneliness among men younger than 80 years of age, indicating its limitation as a potential marker of loneliness risk.

Summary: Insomnia and burnout are highly prevalent in the general population. This study aimed to determine various mental and somatic risk factors for their development, stratifying for sex and age group. The results showed that all eight studied conditions were significant risk factors for both insomnia and burnout. The study highlights the importance of a broad assessment of both mental and somatic conditions in the prevention of insomnia and burnout.

Summary: This study investigates the association between income inequality and hospitalizations of despair. The results show significant associations between income inequality and hospitalizations of despair, drug overdose-related hospitalizations, and all-cause hospitalizations. These findings are important for policy discussions on reducing income inequality and identifying potential interventions for the prevention of drug overdose, alcohol-related liver disease, and suicide attempts/self-harm.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between subjective social position (SSP) and cognitive function among older adults in rural South Africa. The results showed that SSP was significantly associated with cognitive scores independent of objective socioeconomic position measures, and this association persisted over a time span of approximately three years.

Summary: The depth and breadth of clinical data in EHR systems paired with innovative machine learning methods can help identify novel risk factors for complex diseases. Researchers developed large electronic population-based cohorts with comprehensive EHR data to address challenges in analyzing the data. These cohorts will be used to identify novel sex-specific risk factors for complex diseases using advanced machine learning approaches.

Summary: Diabetes and population aging have become global public health issues. The incidence rates of type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes in China have been continuously increasing, especially among young individuals. Type 1 diabetes-related mortality decreased, while type 2 diabetes-related mortality increased in males. Population aging may be associated with a significant change in the number of deaths from 1990 to 2019.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the risk factors associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection in homeless people. The results showed that the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in the homeless community was higher compared to the general population. Factors such as staying in emergency shelters and having contact with a higher number of people per day were associated with increased risk, while smoking and having financial resources were associated with lower risk.

Summary: Both individual and parental educational levels have independent effects on multimorbidity, with the most pronounced effect on the 'Many conditions' group. The combination of lower individual and parental educational levels increases the odds of belonging to the 'Many conditions' group. Addressing inequality throughout the life course is important in mitigating the risk of multimorbidity.

Summary: Alcohol and other drugs play a significant role in suicide deaths, with approximately a quarter of suicide deaths in Canada attributed to alcohol. The proportion of suicide decedents with drugs or alcohol present at the time of death varies widely. Research on the acute use of alcohol and drugs among suicide decedents in Canada is lacking.

Summary: This study examined the effectiveness of universal suicide prevention interventions in high-income OECD countries and found that physical barrier interventions significantly reduced suicide mortality, while law and regulation reform interventions hold promise. Gender differences in the effectiveness of interventions were observed, suggesting the need for stratification by sex in future studies.

Summary: The study found relatively low levels of opioid and cannabis use during pregnancy, but higher levels of cannabis use during pregnancy and breastfeeding in Canada. Women who used these substances were typically younger, had lower levels of education, and exhibited factors such as thoughts of self-harm or symptoms of anxiety.
