Incorporating non-stationarity from climate change into rainfall frequency and intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) curves

Katherine E. Schlef, Kenneth E. Kunkel, Casey Brown, Yonas Demissie, Dennis P. Lettenmaier, Anna Wagner, Mark S. Wigmosta, Thomas R. Karl, David R. Easterling, Kimberly J. Wang, Baptiste Francois, Eugene Yan

Summary: Intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) curves, also known as precipitation frequency estimates, are important for designing urban drainage systems, flood control infrastructure, and other structures. However, current approaches for estimating IDF curves need to be revised to account for non-stationarity caused by global climate change. This review summarizes the current knowledge and ongoing research on IDF curves under non-stationarity, including changes in extreme precipitation, approaches for curve estimation, regionalization, challenges of design values and uncertainty, and future research needs.

Estimating spatiotemporally continuous snow water equivalent from intermittent satellite observations: an evaluation using synthetic data

Xiaoyu Ma, Dongyue Li, Yiwen Fang, Steven A. Margulis, Dennis P. Lettenmaier

Summary: Accurate estimation of snow water equivalent (SWE) based on remote sensing in mountain areas has been challenging. However, there is potential for satellite-based SWE observations along ground tracks that cover a portion of the watershed. In this study, statistical and machine learning approaches were evaluated to estimate SWE in the upper Tuolumne River watershed using synthetic data. The results showed that SWE estimation improved with increased ground tracks, and the dominant variable controlling TTA SWE estimation was precipitation.
