In this study, peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) was detected in frozen pooled tissue samples from a dead Asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica). The samples were negative for canine distemper virus and positive for PPRV nucleic acids when tested with one-step RT-PCR using the appropriate virus-specific primers. Subsequent amplification, cloning, and sequencing of the partial nucleocapsid, matrix, and fusion genes confirmed the presence of PPRV nucleic acid. Comparative sequence and phylogenetic analyses of the structural genes of the isolated virus confirmed that the virus belonged to Asian lineage IV and was closely related to PPRV circulating in India.

Foot-and-mouth disease virus induces PERK-mediated autophagy to suppress the antiviral interferon response

Huildore Bommanna Ranjitha, Veena Ammanathan, Neha Guleria, Madhusudan Hosamani, B. Parameshwaraiah Sreenivasa, Valiya Valappil Dhanesh, Rashmi Santhoshkumar, B. K. Chandrasekhar Sagar, Bishnu Prasad Mishra, Raj Kumar Singh, Aniket Sanyal, Ravi Manjithaya, Suresh H. Basagoudanavar

Summary: Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) induces UPR and enhances functional autophagy through the PERK-mediated pathway, with inhibition of BiP alleviating infection. Modulation of UPR and autophagy can reduce viral progeny numbers by enhancing interferon response.

Production of compost with biopesticide property from toxic weed Lantana: Quantification of alkaloids in compost and bacterial pathogen suppression

Rani Rai, Raj Kumar Singh, Surindra Suthar

Summary: Composting toxic weed Lantana camara foliage with cow dung resulted in increased nutrient content and decreased organic carbon. The compost showed prevention against Escherichia coll. and Salmonella, while exhibiting strong pathogen-inhibiting properties. GC MS analysis revealed the presence of biocidal compounds in the Lantana compost, suggesting its potential as a bio-manure with biopesticide properties for sustainable organic farming.

Genetic characterization of foot-and-mouth disease virus serotype O isolates collected during 2014-2018 revealed dominance of O/ME-SA/Ind2001e and the emergence of a novel lineage in India

Shyam Singh Dahiya, Saravanan Subramaniam, Jitendra Kumar Biswal, Biswajit Das, Bikash Ranjan Prusty, Syed Zeeshan Ali, Sagar Ashok Khulape, Jajati Keshari Mohapatra, Raj Kumar Singh

Summary: Research in India has shown that foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is primarily caused by the ME-SA topotype of the FMDV serotype O, with the O/ME-SA/Ind2001e lineage being the most prevalent during 2014-2018. Further assessment is needed to understand the spread of the new O/ME-SA/2018 cluster, while the Indian vaccine strain O/INDR2/1975 has been found to provide adequate antigenic coverage against emerging and prevalent O serotype lineages.

Summary: The study used national surveillance data to understand the temporal and spatial epidemiology of PPR in India. Analysis from 1995 to 2019 showed PPR as a significant disease in sheep and goats, with outbreaks occurring round the year and most frequently in winter. Since 2011, outbreaks have progressively declined in most regions of India.
