To investigate the clinical utility of C-reactive protein (CRP) determination in dogs, its plasma concentration was measured by a laser nephelometric method in 928 dogs with various diseases, and was compared with other inflammatory parameters. CRP concentration was elevated in various inflammatory diseases, this was most frequently observed in cases with neoplastic and immune-mediated diseases. All cases of pyometra, panniculitis, acute pancreatitis, polyarthritis, and hemangiosarcoma showed significantly elevated CRP concentrations. On the other hand, the CRP concentration was elevated only in few cases of neurological diseases such as epilepsy, meningoencephalitis, and hydrocephalus and endocrine diseases such as hypothyroidism, hyperadrenocorticism, and diabetes mellitus. Only a weak correlation was observed between the CRP concentration and white blood cell (WBC) counts (r=0.44) but no correlation with band neutrophil counts. There was no correlation between the CRP and albumin concentrations, but a weak negative correlation (r=-0.40) when excluding chronic intestinal diseases and nephrotic syndrome, which can cause protein loss. Thus, CRP can be useful to detect inflammations that cannot be detected by WBC and, or band neutrophil counts, suggesting that the examination of CRP concentration is essential as routine diagnostic test.

Transmission of Helicobacter pylori between a human and two dogs: A case report

Sanae Kubota-Aizawa, Yasuo Matsubara, Hideyuki Kanemoto, Hitomi Mimuro, Kazuyuki Uchida, James Chambers, Masaya Tsuboi, Koichi Ohno, Kenjiro Fukushima, Naoya Kato, Hiroshi Yotsuyanagi, Hajime Tsujimoto

Summary: The study revealed that two dogs and their owner were infected with the same H. pylori strain, indicating for the first time that H. pylori can be transmitted between humans and dogs. Further research is needed to investigate the risk factors for H. pylori transmission between humans and dogs from a preventive epidemiology perspective.

Summary: Six genes associated with resistance to drugs used in CHOP-based protocol in canine lymphoma were identified in this study, and a novel scoring system to predict resistance to these drugs was proposed. This system may aid in selecting the most appropriate chemotherapy protocol for individual dogs with lymphoma.

Summary: Canine cutaneous lymphoma, primarily of T-cell origin, is classified into epitheliotropic and nonepitheliotropic subtypes, each with distinct histological subtypes. Prognosis is influenced by histopathological subtype, clinical variables such as neoplastic lymphocytes in peripheral blood and treatment response.

Summary: This study investigated the immunogenetic basis of refractory CE in French bulldogs and miniature dachshunds, identifying a protective haplotype against CE in French bulldogs and suggesting disease heterogeneity across breeds. The findings support the importance of further DLA studies in different breeds for improving early diagnosis, treatment, and prevention strategies.

Summary: The higher the developmental stage of GBM, the more likely it is to exhibit biliary tract related clinical signs. The nadir SBP value deserves further investigation as a prognostic or potentially modifiable variable, particularly in the presence of gallbladder rupture.

Anaphylaxis after vaccination for cats in Japan

Megumi Yoshida, Keijiro Mizukami, Masaharu Hisasue, Ichiro Imanishi, Keigo Kurata, Masaki Ochiai, Masato Itoh, Tadahiro Nasukawa, Jumpei Uchiyama, Hajime Tsujimoto, Masahiro Sakaguchi

Summary: This study examined severe adverse reactions in cats after vaccination, and found that a significant percentage experienced anaphylaxis, with a high mortality rate. Analysis of commercially available feline vaccines detected high levels of bovine serum albumin, which may be related to the occurrence of anaphylactic reactions.

Association between intestinal lymphangiectasia and expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase in dogs with lymphoplasmacytic enteritis

Takuro Nagahara, Koichi Ohno, Itsuma Nagao, Taisuke Nakagawa, Yuko Goto-koshino, Masaya Tsuboi, James K. Chambers, Kazuyuki Uchida, Hirotaka Tomiyasu, Hajime Tsujimoto

Summary: Intestinal lymphangiectasia (IL) is a common complication in dogs. This study aimed to investigate the potential role of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in the development of IL in dogs with lymphoplasmacytic enteritis (LPE). The results showed that there was a significant increase in iNOS expression in the duodenal tissues of dogs with IL-negative or IL-positive LPE compared to control dogs. However, there was no significant difference in iNOS expression between IL-positive and IL-negative tissues, suggesting that factors other than nitric oxide may contribute to the development of IL in dogs with LPE.

Summary: Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a rare malignancy in dogs, with poor prognosis. This study investigated the involvement of apoptosis inhibitor of macrophage (AIM) in the development of HS in dogs. The expression of AIM in tumor tissue and serum AIM levels were evaluated, and the effects of AIM overexpression on HS cells were studied. The results suggest that elevated expression of AIM in tumor and serum could induce the progression of HS cells in dogs, and serum AIM levels may serve as a biomarker for HS.
