Summary: Scratch programming helps students develop problem solving skills and computational thinking, while also improving their reflective thinking abilities. This study aimed to investigate the development of reflective thinking skills in problem solving and computational thinking among elementary school students through Scratch instruction. The study used a sequential exploratory design and mixed methods approach, involving 524 students and 8 mathematics teachers. The results showed that Scratch significantly enhanced students' reflective thinking skills in problem solving and computational thinking. Furthermore, Scratch instruction was found to have positive effects on the mathematical learning environment.

The results showed that learning engagement, self-directed learning ability, and critical thinking ability were positively associated with problem-solving ability. Furthermore, learning engagement indirectly influenced problem-solving ability via self-directed learning ability and critical thinking ability. The total effects of self-directed learning and critical thinking ability on problem-solving ability were more prominent than learning engagement.

This study compared 44 reflections from two university-level sustainability courses.
