Background Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) is the presence of gastric contents proximal to the stomach. Pathologic consequences secondary to GER are termed gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Objectives The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of GER and GERD in premature calves by endoscopic examination. Animals Ten healthy and 51 premature calves were included in the study. All premature calves also had respiratory distress syndrome. Methods Esophagoscopy of premature calves was conducted by fiber optic endoscopy. Abnormalities such as increased saliva, hyperemia, hemorrhage, petechiae, presence of abomasal content in the esophagus, and relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) were evaluated by endoscopy. Results The prevalence of GERD and GER in the premature calves was 55 and 67%, respectively. Hyperemia and hyperemia with hemorrhage or petechiation of the esophageal mucosa were determined by endoscopic examination. Hyperemia was commonly observed in the distal esophageal mucosa, although a few hyperemic areas also were observed in other portions of the esophagus. In addition to these abnormalities, LES relaxation, abomasal fluid in the distal esophagus, abomasal content in the esophagus, and increased saliva also were observed in premature calves with GER. Conclusions The prevalence of both GER (67%) and GERD (55%) in premature calves was high in the study. Endoscopy provides a practical, rapid, noninvasive, and reasonably accurate method for determining the presence of GER and GERD in premature calves.

Serum sRAGE and sE-selectin levels are useful biomarkers of lung injury and prediction of mortality in calves with perinatal asphyxia

M. Ider, A. Naseri, M. Ok, E. Gulersoy, T. M. Bas, K. Uney, T. M. Parlak, A. Abdelaziz

Summary: The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of biomarkers specific to lung endothelial and epithelial damage in determining lung injury and its severity in calves with perinatal asphyxia. The study also aimed to assess the prognostic importance of these biomarkers among survivors and non-survivors. The results showed that serum concentrations of sRAGE and sE-selectin played a significant role in determining lung injury, and pH, pCO(2), lactate, HCO3, BE, and respiratory rate were useful indicators for predicting mortality.

Can diarrhea affect the pharmacokinetics of racecadotril in neonatal calves?

Bunyamin Tras, Mahmut Ok, Tugba Melike Parlak, Merve Ider, Ramazan Yildiz, Hatice Eser Faki, Zeynep Ozdemir Kutahya, Kamil Uney

Summary: This study aimed to determine the pharmacokinetics of racecadotril, an antisecretory drug used for treating diarrhea, in healthy and infectious diarrhea neonatal calves. The results showed that racecadotril had a long half-life, high maximum concentration, and AUC values in healthy calves, while in calves with infectious diarrhea, the drug concentration was lower and only detected during a short period of time.

EVALUATION OF TRAUMA SCORING AND ENDOTHELIAL GLYCOCALYX INJURY IN CATS WITH HEAD TRAUMA

Kurtulus Parlak, Amir Naseri, Mustafa Yalcin, Eyup Tolga Akyol, Mahmut Ok, Mustafa Arican

Summary: This study evaluated the modified Glasgow Coma Scale (mGCS) and Animal Trauma Triage (ATT) scores, laboratory variables, and prognostic features of trauma-induced endothelial glycocalyx injury in cats with head trauma. The results showed that syndecan-1 and thrombomodulin levels did not differ significantly between healthy cats and cats with head trauma, and the mGCS scoring system was more sensitive than the ATT scoring system in cats with head trauma.

The Usefulness of Serum Brain Damage Biomarkers in Detection and Evaluation of Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy in Calves with Perinatal Asphyxia

Mahmut Ok, Amir Naseri, Mehmet Burak Ates, Merve Ider, Kamil Uney, Mutlu Sevinc, Fatih Hatipoglu, Ramazan Yildiz, Alper Erturk, Nuri Baspinar, Suleyman Serhat Iyigun

Summary: The aim of this study was to determine hypoxic brain damage in calves with perinatal asphyxia using brain-specific damage biomarkers. The results showed that asphyxia and hypoxemia caused hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy in perinatal calves, and UCHL1 and S100B concentrations were found to be useful markers for the determination of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy in calves with perinatal asphyxia. Neurological status scores and some blood gas parameters were helpful in mortality prediction.

Acute Kidney Injury Is Associated with Higher Serum Cys-C and NGAL Concentrations, and Risk of Mortality in Premature Calves with Respiratory Distress Syndrome

Merve Ider, Mahmut Ok, Amir Naseri, Alper Erturk, Tugba Melike Parlak, Ramazan Yildiz, Murat Kaan Durgut

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate hypoxic acute kidney injury (AKI) in premature calves with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) using kidney-specific biomarkers. The study included 10 healthy full-term calves and 70 premature calves with RDS. Arterial blood gas analysis and measurements of kidney function biomarkers were performed at admission and 72 h. The results showed that 38.5% of premature calves with RDS developed AKI, and the mortality risk was four times higher in those with AKI. Serum concentrations of cystatin-C and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin were significantly higher in calves with AKI.

M. K. Durgut, M. Ok

Summary: This study aimed to assess the usefulness of injury biomarkers specific to the intestines in identifying the presence and degree of intestinal epithelial damage in coccidiosis-infected calves. The study measured various biomarkers in blood samples from infected calves before and after treatment, and compared them to healthy calves. The results showed that certain biomarkers, including I-FABP, TFF-3, CLD-3, ACTG2, and IL-8, were elevated in infected calves and can be reliable indicators of intestinal epithelium injury.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the cardiotoxic effect of combining tilmicosin and diclofenac sodium in sheep. Thirty-two sheep were divided into four groups: tilmicosin only, diclofenac sodium only, combination of tilmicosin and diclofenac sodium, and control group. Blood samples were taken at different time points to measure cardiac markers. The results showed that the combination group exhibited significantly higher levels of cardiac biomarkers compared to the other groups, indicating potential cardiac damage.

Summary: This study investigates the diagnostic utility of clinical and laboratory examinations in cats with symptomatic feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) or asymptomatic feline enteric coronavirus (FECV). The results show that pH, HCO3, base excess, lactate, MCV, and magnesium levels are important in the course of the disease, and AGP is useful for evaluating the presence of an inflammatory state. Clinical, laboratory, and serum AGP evaluations can be used to determine the likelihood of FIP and FECV development.

Huseyin Gungor, Orhan Corum, Duygu Durna Corum, Alper Serhat Kumru, Gokhan Yilmaz, Devran Coskun, Alparslan Coskun, Kamil Uney

Summary: The aim of this study was to determine the pharmacokinetic change of meloxicam in sheep after intravenous administration at different doses. The results showed that the duration of meloxicam in plasma, as well as the elimination half-life and area under the concentration-time curve, increased as the dose increased, while the total clearance decreased. Meloxicam exhibited non-linear pharmacokinetics in sheep, and when administered intravenously at a dose of 1 mg/kg or above, plasma concentrations became unpredictable.
