Summary: Four vertebrae of a plesiosaur were found in the Katterfeld Formation of the Ayse = n Basin in Chile. Based on ammonoid biostratigraphy, they are assigned to the Hauterivian age. This discovery represents the southernmost and first record of plesiosaurs in the Lower Cretaceous and Hauterivian of Chile.

Summary: Serpentisuchops pfisterae is an Upper Cretaceous plesiosaur with both elongated snout and elongated neck features. Its long snout is an ancestral trait, while its long neck is secondarily derived and similar to other related species. It has a piscivorous diet and likely used its neck and snout in fast lateral strikes.

Summary: The introduction of structural complexity to nanoparticles brings interesting properties. However, breaking the regularity in their chemical synthesis has been challenging. This study successfully synthesized two types of irregular Au nanoparticles, bitten nanospheres and nanodecahedrons, with size control by combining seed-mediated growth and Pt(IV)-induced etching.

Summary: A 42-year-old female with rheumatoid arthritis and erythema nodosum presented with skin lesions in the upper and lower extremities. Biopsy confirmed panniculitis and FDG PET/CT scan showed increased FDG uptake in multiple subcutaneous nodules. The report highlights the rare finding of FDG uptake in panniculitis lesions.

Summary: Illegal trade in shark fins is a global law enforcement issue, as some commonly traded species are listed on CITES Appendix II. Processing of fins in the supply chain hampers visual species identification, making genetic tools necessary. A case study in Colombia found that a majority of seized shark fins were from threatened and CITES-listed species, raising concerns over identification challenges for law enforcement if early-supply chain processing becomes the norm.

Summary: A new species of deepwater catshark, Apristurus ovicorrugatus, is discovered in northwestern Australia. The unique egg cases belonging to an unknown species prompted further investigation, and it was found that the previously identified A. sinensis specimen from Dampier Archipelago was gravid with a single egg case. The egg cases of this new species have distinct T-shaped ridges on the dorsal and ventral surfaces.

Summary: Shark fin soup is a popular dish consumed by Asian communities worldwide, driving the demand for shark fins and leading to a decline in shark populations by up to 70%. This research used molecular techniques to identify shark species in bowls of soup collected in Singapore and found endangered species with high levels of mercury. The consumption of shark fin soup likely exposes consumers to unsafe levels of mercury and further contributes to the decline of global shark populations.

Summary: This study retrospectively included 25 patients with solitary hypothalamic lesions and found common clinical manifestations of polydipsia/polyuria and amenorrhea. The majority of patients suffered from hypopituitarism caused by hypothalamic lesions, with Langerhans cell histiocytosis and hypothalamitis being the most common pathological diagnoses. For diagnosis, surgical biopsy/resection or stereotactic biopsy were reliable and relatively safe procedures. Metabolic disorders were severe in these patients and required comprehensive management.

Summary: This article describes the details of the eyes of the Cretaceous crab Callichimaera perplexa, which had remarkably large eyes and a unique body form. It is the first post-Paleozoic arthropod known to preserve both internal and external eye structures. The research shows that C. perplexa was a highly visual predator that inhabited well-lit environments.

Summary: Archosaurs showed increasing bipedalism during their evolutionary history, with hindlimbs becoming major weight-bearing appendages. Studies on homologies of pedal muscles among sauropsids revealed that some muscles between non-avian sauropsids and avians are homologous, challenging classical hypotheses. This new hypothesis postulates that certain avian and non-avian muscles are homologous, without drastic changes in attachment sites.

Summary: Fossil evidence from the Osawa Formation in Northeast Japan indicates a complex food-chain in the marine ecosystem post-end-Permian mass extinction. The sedimentary sequence records the paleo environment between the eastern Tethys and Panthalassa, showing varying redox conditions and active benthic activity in oxygen-rich settings. The data suggests a mildly reducing bottom water condition in the Spathian oceanic region, supporting the recovery and establishment of the Early Triassic marine ecosystem.

Summary: The fossil record of ornithischians in South America is sparse, but recent discoveries show more diversity than previously thought. Fossil remains of ankylosaurs and ornithopods, including basal euiguanodontians and hadrosaurs, were found in the Chorrillo Formation in southern Argentina. The presence of ankylosaurs and hadrosaurids in South America may be a result of migration or vicariance from other continents.
