Summary: This study investigated the applicability of Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) as a method to study the dynamics of amputees wearing prostheses. A suitable HiL setup was presented and the first-ever HiL test of a prosthetic foot was performed. Results showed that HiL could replicate basic gait characteristics, but there were limitations in the setup. The study suggests that HiL may be a suitable method for testing foot prostheses.

Summary: Secondary loop refrigeration systems offer advantages over conventional systems: refrigerant charge reduction, maintenance simplification, and reduced safety hazards. This article presents a fault detection and isolation scheme for a secondary loop refrigeration system, which can detect and isolate parametric faults (dirt/ice-buildup and secondary loop pump failure) and sensor faults (four temperature sensors in the secondary loop). The fault detection and isolation system is based on unknown input observers and extended Kalman filters. Experimental results show that important parametric faults and sensor faults can be reliably detected and isolated.

Summary: The research explores the use of system dynamic methodology to engage stakeholders in EU fisheries, demonstrating the importance of adequate stakeholder involvement and online consultation as an effective method. The process of group model-building led to the evolution of a final model that highlighted active involvement and progressive learning. Two quantitative stock-flow models were built to show how sustainability in economic, social, and environmental aspects can be achieved with the right set of policies.

Summary: A mathematical model was developed to predict the flow behavior in a conventional U type loop-seal by considering it as a lumped system. The relationships between the gross forward particle flow rate and fluidization number, as well as the virtual backward particle flow rate and solid circulation rate, were analyzed. Effects of side aeration and heat exchanger on loop-seal performance were studied. Experimental data regression analysis yielded function constants with determination coefficient not less than 0.97.

Summary: Climate change has significant impacts on Earth's ecosystems and carbon budgets, potentially shifting the Arctic from a carbon sink to a source. Uncertainties in terrestrial biosphere models (TBMs) challenge the prediction of this switch. One major source of uncertainty is model parameterization, resulting from a mismatch between available data and model needs.

Summary: This study adopts a deformation history integral type model to simulate the nonlinear material effects of high damping rubber bearings (HDRBs). In order to reduce computational costs, the equivalent linearization method is used to estimate the structural response. By deriving calculation formulas and using an iterative process, the maximum deformation of the isolation layer is estimated. The proposed method is verified through an example, showing its accuracy for assessing the seismic demands of structures isolated by HDRBs.

Summary: This paper focuses on improving the motor recovery function of the joint in brain-machine interface (BMI) systems by analyzing and improving a classical single-joint information transmission (SJIT) model and designing an auxiliary controller based on the model predictive control (MPC) strategy. The simulation results demonstrate that the improved model can more accurately track the target movement trajectory and the designed BMI system effectively recovers the motor function of the joint, even under noises and disturbances.

Summary: Switched reluctance motors (SRM) are attracting attention from the industry due to their simple construction, high reliability, and efficiency. However, controlling SRM is challenging due to its nonlinearities and variable parameters. This study proposes a novel approach combining model-in-loop and hardware-in-loop simulations to control the speed and torque of SRM. The proposed adaptive supervisory self-learning control approach (ASSC) effectively reduces speed variations and exhibits better performance compared to other control approaches. Experimentation confirms the simulation results and demonstrates the improved efficiency of SRM with the recommended ASSC controller.

Summary: This research utilizes a systems thinking approach to map out causal mechanisms and risk factors of Alzheimer's disease, highlighting non-trivial feedback loops and the central role of modifiable risk factors like social relationships and physical activity in the progression of the disease. The study also emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary group model building in providing novel insights into complex disorders and lays the foundation for developing computational models to simulate the effects of risk factors on Alzheimer's disease.

Summary: In this paper, a stochastic framework for the stability and performance analysis of linear human-in-the-loop (HiTL) control systems is proposed. The framework integrates the modeling of human behavior using a hidden semi-Markov model (HS-MM) and the modeling of machine dynamics. A hidden semi-Markov jump system (HS-MJS) model is then constructed to describe the HiTL control system. The paper also presents conditions for the stochastic stability of the HiTL control system and develops a control design method for disturbance attenuation.

Summary: The study focused on screening phytochemicals and phenolic/flavonoid contents of different Chenopodium species, supporting their traditional medicinal use for pain relief. Chloroform fractions of Chenopodium ambrosioides and Chenopodium botrys showed high levels of phenolic and flavonoid contents, with significant inhibition of pain responses in in-vivo experiments. The analgesic effects were partially reversed by ursolic acid and completely reversed by naloxone, suggesting involvement of opioid receptors in the mechanisms of action.

Summary: With the growing focus on business analytics and data-driven decision-making, there is a greater need for humans to interact effectively with data. Presenting data in terms of instances and attributes provides a flexible and usable structure for querying, exploring, and analyzing data. Instance-based data representations were found to lead to better results in both open-ended tasks and closed-ended tasks compared to class-based representations.
