Hepatocellular Necrosis, Apoptosis, and Proliferation after Transcatheter Arterial Embolization or Chemoembolization in a Standardized Rabbit Model

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of transcatheter arterial chemoembolization versus transcatheter arterial embolization on hepatocellular damage, apoptosis, proliferation, and proinflammatory response in a rabbit VX2 tumor model. Materials and Methods: Rabbits implanted with VX2 tumors in left liver lobes were randomly divided into three groups: a control group (n = 9) that underwent infusion of distilled water into the left hepatic artery, an embolization group (n = 15) that underwent left hepatic artery embolization with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) particles, and a chemoembolization group (n = 15) that underwent left hepatic artery infusion of a mixture of 10-hydroxycamptothecin and iodized oil followed by PVA embolization. Serum and liver samples were collected at 6 hours, 3 days, and 7 days postoperatively. Liver damage was measured by liver function tests and histologic analysis. Ki-67 immunohistochemistry and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate nick-end labeling were performed to quantify proliferating and apoptotic cells. Serum tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha levels were measured to assess proinflammatory response. Results: Compared with embolization, chemoembolization caused liver injury with a greater increase in serum alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase levels on days 3 and 7; histologic analysis showed increased hepatic necrosis in adjacent liver tissue beginning at day 3 and increased serum levels of TNF-alpha at 6 hours. By contrast, chemoembolization resulted in a slower increase in hepatocyte proliferation. Additionally, increased apoptotic hepatocytes were observed after embolization and chemoembolization. Conclusions: In contrast to embolization, nonsuperselective transcatheter arterial chemoembolization increased hepatocellular damage and stimulated systemic proinflammatory cytokine release, but inhibited hepatocyte proliferation.

Efficacy and Safety of Lobaplatin-TACE in the Treatment of Primary Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Retrospective Study

Summary: The study found that lobaplatin-TACE has a higher safety and efficacy in treating primary hepatocellular carcinoma. Compared with the epirubicin-TACE group, the lobaplatin-TACE group had higher tumor response rate and survival rates. There was no statistical difference in liver function and blood routine changes after TACE between the two groups, but the platelet decrease was more significant in the lobaplatin-TACE group.

Risk factors for distal stent graft-induced new entry after endovascular repair in uncomplicated type B aortic dissection

Summary: This study investigated the risk factors for distal stent graft-induced new entry (dSINE) in patients with uncomplicated type B aortic dissection (TBAD) who underwent thoracic endovascular aortic repair. It was found that a type III aortic arch, decreased angle, increased distal oversizing, and increased distal mismatch ratio were significant risk factors for dSINE. The use of a tapered stent graft with a >4-mm taper could prevent dSINE, and aggressive reintervention for dSINE led to favorable long-term outcomes.

The immune-chemo-embolization effect of temperature sensitive gold nanomedicines against liver cancer

Summary: In this study, gold nanoparticles modified temperature sensitive polymer was successfully used to encapsulate doxorubicin and developed into gold nanomedicines. The results showed that these gold nanomedicines exhibited excellent antitumor efficacy and improved the tumor immunosuppressive microenvironment.

Pyogenic liver abscess in non-liver cancer patients and liver cancer patients treated with TACE: Etiological characteristics, treatment, and outcome analysis

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 48 consecutive patients with pyogenic liver abscess (PLA), comparing the clinical outcomes and prognosis evaluation in non-liver cancer (Non-LC) and liver cancer (LC-TACE) patients treated with transarterial chemoembolization (TACE). The results showed a higher mortality rate and longer cure time in the LC-TACE group compared to the Non-LC group. The pathogen culture results and other factors also differed between the two groups, suggesting the need for a more comprehensive treatment approach after TACE.

Transarterial viroembolization improves the therapeutic efficacy of immune-excluded liver cancer: Three birds with one stone

Summary: The optimal viral titer of OH2 was determined to be 1 x 10(7) CCID50. Transarterial viroembolization (TAVE) showed better therapeutic efficacy compared to other administration routes. The TAVE treatment improved locoregional tumor response, standby effect, survival benefit, and antitumor immune memory in immune-excluded liver cancer. TAVE is considered as a safe and effective modality for clinical practice.

TACE versus TACE plus entecavir versus TACE plus tenofovir in the treatment of HBV associated hepatocellular carcinoma

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the need for combining transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) with antiviral therapy in HBV-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. The results showed that TACE combined with entecavir and TACE combined with tenofovir had higher efficacy and safety, but tenofovir had some impact on renal function.

Endovascular treatment of aorto-iliac occlusive disease with TASC II C and D lesions: 10 year's experience of clinical technique

Summary: This study evaluated the therapeutic efficacy and safety of endovascular treatment for aorto-iliac occlusive disease (AIOD) with TASC II C and D lesions, and discussed the experiences with interventional procedures and treatment options in our center over a span of 10 years. The results showed that endovascular treatment of AIOD patients with TASC-II C and D lesions is safe and has a high rate of middle-term and long-term primary patency.
