Green tea (Camellia sinensis) has anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effects, which may be beneficial to athletes performing high-intensity exercise. This study investigated the effects of carbohydrate and green tea coingestion on sprint cycling performance and associated oxidative stress and immunoendocrine responses to exercise. In a crossover design, 9 well-trained male cyclists completed 3 sets of 8 repetitions of 100-m uphill sprint cycling while ingesting green tea and carbohydrate (TEA) (22 mg/kg body mass catechins, 6 mg/kg body mass caffeine, 230 mg/kg glucose, and 110 mg/kg fructose) or carbohydrate only (CHO) (230 mg/kg body mass glucose and 110 mg/kg body mass fructose) during each 10-min recovery period between sets. Blood samples were collected before exercise, 10 min after exercise, and 14 h after exercise. There was no effect of acute TEA ingestion on cycling sprint performance (p = 0.29), although TEA maintained postexercise testosterone and lymphocyte concentrations, which decreased significantly in the CHO group (p < 0.001). While there was a trend for lower postexercise neutrophil count with TEA (p = 0.05), there were no significant differences between TEA and CHO for circulating cytokines (p > 0.20), markers of oxidative stress and antioxidant capacity (p > 0.17), adiponectin concentration (p = 0.60), or muscle damage markers (p > 0.64). While acute green tea ingestion prevents the postexercise decrease in testosterone and lymphocytes, it does not appear to benefit cycling sprint performance or reduce markers of oxidation and inflammation when compared with carbohydrate alone.

Effects of the timing of acute mulberry leaf extract intake on postprandial glucose metabolism in healthy adults: a randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind study

Masaki Takahashi, Yui Mineshita, Jumpei Yamagami, Chunyi Wang, Kyoko Fujihira, Yu Tahara, Hyeon-Ki Kim, Takashi Nakaoka, Shigenobu Shibata

Summary: This study found that taking mulberry leaf extract in the evening can improve glucose tolerance. Additionally, taking mulberry leaf extract in the morning can reduce insulin concentrations. Therefore, the timing of mulberry leaf extract intake is crucial for improving blood sugar control.

Are Women with Normal-Weight Obesity at Higher Risk for Cardiometabolic Disorders?

Damoon Ashtary-Larky, Sara Niknam, Meysam Alipour, Reza Bagheri, Omid Asbaghi, Mehrnaz Mohammadian, Salvador J. Jaime, Julien S. Baker, Alexei Wong, Katsuhiko Suzuki, Reza Afrisham

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the cardiometabolic abnormalities in women with normal-weight obesity (NWO) in comparison with lean, overweight, and obese women. Significant differences were observed in HDL concentrations between NWO, lean, and obese participants. Individuals with NWO had a significantly higher incidence of cardiometabolic abnormalities when compared to lean participants.

Electrical pulse stimulation-induced muscle contraction alters the microRNA and mRNA profiles of circulating extracellular vesicles in mice

Noriaki Kawanishi, Takaki Tominaga, Katsuhiko Suzuki

Summary: This study found that resistance exercise, specifically electrical pulse stimulation-induced muscle contraction, resulted in changes in the miRNA and mRNA profiles of circulating extracellular vesicles. Muscle-specific miRNAs such as miR-1, miR-133, and miR-206 showed significant upregulation after 90 minutes of muscle contraction. Additionally, mRNA expression changes in circulating extracellular vesicles after muscle contraction were found to promote angiogenesis and regulate the immune response. These changes in extracellular vesicle properties may play a crucial role in resistance exercise-induced physiological adaptations.

Summary: Several food components, including polyphenols and phytonutrients, have immunomodulatory effects. Collagen, known for its various bioactivities, can promote wound healing and relieve symptoms of bone/joint disease. This study investigated the immunomodulatory effects of collagen-derived dipeptides and amino acids on macrophages and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), and found that there is no difference in cytokine secretion between dipeptides and amino acids.

Sulforaphane Attenuates Neutrophil ROS Production, MPO Degranulation and Phagocytosis, but Does Not Affect NET Formation Ex Vivo and In Vitro

Shiori Wakasugi-Onogi, Sihui Ma, Ruheea Taskin Ruhee, Yishan Tong, Yasuhiro Seki, Katsuhiko Suzuki

Summary: This study found that sulforaphane has various effects on neutrophil functions, including inhibiting reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, degranulation, phagocytosis, and neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation. Sulforaphane also has direct antioxidant activity. It was observed that sulforaphane can decrease the release of inflammatory cytokines and myeloperoxidase from neutrophils. In addition, sulforaphane directly removes ROS, including hypochlorous acid (HOCl).

Summary: In this study, the researchers investigated the effect of nordalbergin, a compound derived from Dalbergia sissoo wood bark, on inflammation in microglial cells. They found that nordalbergin could suppress the production of inflammatory molecules and reduce oxidative stress through inhibiting specific signaling pathways. These findings suggest that nordalbergin has the potential to inhibit the progression of neurodegenerative diseases.

Summary: In this study, the demethylated forms of citrus nobiletin and tangeretin, 4'-demethylnobiletin and 4'-demethyltangeretin, were found to inhibit osteoclast differentiation and function via the suppression of the NF-KB pathway. These compounds may have potential applications in maintaining bone health and preventing metabolic bone diseases such as osteoporosis.

The Effect of High-Intensity Interval Training Type on Body Fat Percentage, Fat and Fat-Free Mass: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Clinical Trials

Fatemeh Khodadadi, Reza Bagheri, Raoof Negaresh, Sajjad Moradi, Michael Nordvall, Donny M. Camera, Alexei Wong, Katsuhiko Suzuki

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the effects of different types of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on body composition changes. The results showed that HIIT, particularly cycling-based HIIT, led to reductions in fat mass and body fat percentage, as well as increased fat-free mass. These findings suggest that cycling-based HIIT may be the most effective for improving body composition.

Chrono-exercise: Time-of-day-dependent physiological responses to exercise

Hyeon-Ki Kim, Zsolt Radak, Masaki Takahashi, Takayuki Inami, Shigenobu Shibata

Summary: Exercise is an effective strategy to prevent and improve obesity and metabolic diseases. It exerts metabolic effects through skeletal muscle adaptations as well as inter-organ signaling in the liver, adipose tissue, and pancreas. Additionally, circadian rhythms play a role in metabolic functions, such as glucose and lipid tolerance, which may be influenced by exercise timing.

microRNAs slow translating ribosomes to prevent protein misfolding in eukaryotes

Hiroaki Sako, Mohieldin Youssef, Olga Elisseeva, Takayuki Akimoto, Katsuhiko Suzuki, Takashi Ushida, Tadashi Yamamoto

Summary: Slower translation rates reduce protein misfolding by allowing time for proper folding. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), which are absent in prokaryotes, can stall translating ribosomes, preventing misfolding with little effect on protein abundance. This eukaryote-specific mechanism provides insights into co-translational protein folding and has potential in targeting protein misfolding diseases.
