Summary: Fine-needle aspiration biopsies (FNA) are commonly used to exclude the malignant nature of thyroid nodules, but a significant proportion of cases are indeterminate. A study found that matrix-assisted laser-desorption ionization mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI) can improve the diagnostic performance of FNA by separating benign and malignant cell areas. However, the performance of the model is affected by poor spectra and noise.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between cyclin D2 (CCND2) and miR-206 expression in fine-needle aspiration cytology of thyroid carcinoma. The results showed that the expression level of miR-206 was significantly decreased and CCND2 was significantly increased in thyroid cancer patients compared to those with benign thyroid nodules. CCND2 and miR-206 expression were negatively correlated in thyroid cancer tissues. They may become new biomarkers for clinical diagnosis of thyroid cancer based on fine-needle aspiration cytology of thyroid nodules.

Summary: This study compared the effectiveness of ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration and capillary sampling with different gauge needles for cervical lymph node biopsy. Results showed that 22G fine-needle aspiration and 22G capillary sampling were more effective in sampling adequacy and diagnostic efficiency compared to 25G fine-needle aspiration. The study suggests that 22G fine-needle aspiration and 22G capillary sampling may be more suitable for diagnosing cervical lymph nodes.

Summary: This study analyzed the clinical outcomes of repeat fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy and genomic classifier results in indeterminate thyroid nodules (ITNs). The results showed that repeat FNA helped reclassify nodules as benign, avoiding the need for diagnostic surgery. The risk of high-risk malignancy in ThyroSeq-positive nodules with repeat indeterminate cytology was low.

Summary: This study analyzed the diagnostic performance of thyroglobulin in fine-needle aspiration (FNA-Tg) in suspicious lateral cervical lymph nodes (CLNs) in patients with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), determined the optimal cutoff value, and discussed factors that may affect the diagnostic value of FNA-Tg. The results showed that FNA-Tg measurement is sensitive enough for diagnosing lateral CLN metastases from PTC, but its diagnostic value is compromised by various factors.

Summary: Fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is crucial for evaluating thyroid nodules with suspicious features, and the use of US-guidance is important for real-time visualization of the needle. Collaboration among different specialties is essential for a standardized and meticulous technique to reduce nondiagnostic specimens and false-negative results.

Summary: This study compared the diagnostic accuracy of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and ultrasound in thyroid nodule diagnosis. The results showed that FNAC had a higher sensitivity than ultrasound, while ultrasound had a higher specificity than FNAC. Combining these two methods can improve diagnostic accuracy.

Summary: The study aimed to develop a practical nomogram to predict the possibility of lateral cervical lymph node metastasis (LLNM) in patients with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) preoperatively. The results showed that the maximum thyroid nodule diameter, thyroglobulin (Tg) level, Tg divided by serum thyroglobulin (Tg/sTg), and cytopathology significantly impacted the LLNM of patients. Using the nomogram developed in this study, surgeons can accurately predict the likelihood of LLNM before surgery and establish personalized treatment plans.

Summary: This study retrospectively examined the cytologic features of anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) cases, identifying key differences with differentiated thyroid carcinoma. The study found that ATC cases commonly exhibit moderate to high cellularity, epithelioid cytomorphology, nuclear enlargement, nuclear membrane irregularities, and other features. Significant differences were observed in nuclear pleomorphism, coarse/clumped chromatin, macronucleoli, apoptosis, and necrosis between ATC and the control group.

Summary: The study demonstrates that combining the BRAF V600E mutation test with the TBSRTC system increases sensitivity, accuracy, and negative predictive value for distinguishing between benign and malignant thyroid nodules. The BRAF V600E mutation test shows superiority in positive predictive value and specificity for detecting malignant nodules compared to the TBSRTC system.
