This paper presents an extensive investigation regarding the impacts of green signal countdown devices (GSCD) on the intersection safety and efficiency, based on field observation of critical driver and vehicle related parameters at two similar intersections (one with GSCD and the other without GSCD) in Shanghai. Statistical analysis results have revealed that the installation of GSCD can (1) encourage drivers to pass the stop-line during the amber time with higher speeds and thus result in better utilization of the amber time and increased capacity of the intersection approach; (2) smooth the driver's response to the phase transition and effectively prevent the sudden change of speeds; (3) effectively eliminate the intersection dilemma zones by allowing the drivers to envision the phase transition and make decisions in advance; and (4) significantly reduce the number of red-light violations. Despite its effectiveness in facilitating the driver decision-making process, the installation of GSCD may adversely increase the possibility of collisions with unexpected crossing vehicles or pedestrians due to the significantly increased speeds of vehicles approaching the amber time. The analysis results from this study will offer the basis for traffic practitioners, researchers, and authorities in China to assess the impact of GSCD with respect to its operational and safety performance, and propose guidelines for its proper field installation.

Trajectory Planning for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles at Freeway Work Zones under Mixed Traffic Environment

Wanjing Ma, Benwei Chen, Chunhui Yu, Xinzhou Qi

Summary: This study proposes a trajectory planning model for CAVs at work zones under mixed traffic environment, considering both longitudinal and lateral trajectories. By observing the states of CAVs and HVs and considering the interactions between vehicle driving behaviors, the number and initial states of unobservable HVs in the planning horizon are estimated. The proposed model formulates a centralized trajectory planning model to optimize acceleration profiles and lane choices of CAVs in the planning horizon, with the objective of minimizing total vehicle delay and fuel consumption.

A flock-like two-dimensional cooperative vehicle formation model based on potential functions

Ruochen Hao, Meiqi Liu, Wanjing Ma, Bart van Arem, Meng Wang

Summary: Due to the complexity of manoeuvre, there is a lack of models in the literature that describe the platoon formation process on urban roads. Inspired by flocking behaviours in nature, this study proposes a two-dimensional model based on the potential theory to describe the dynamics of connected automated vehicle (CAV) groups, which can also be applied to human-driven vehicles in mixed traffic environments.

Do low-carbon rewards incentivize people to ridesplitting? Evidence from structural analysis

Lei Wang, Wenxiang Li, Jinxian Weng, Dong Zhang, Wanjing Ma

Summary: This study identifies the effects of carbon credits and monetary rewards on people's willingness to adopt ridesplitting. It shows that subjective norms and perceived behavioral control significantly affect ridesplitting intentions. Carbon credits have a greater direct effect on ridesplitting intention than monetary rewards. The impact of monetary rewards decreases while the impact of carbon credits increases with increasing incentive value.

Identifying the Adaptability of Different Control Types Based on Delay and Capacity for Isolated Intersection

Ali Danesh, Wanjing Ma, Ling Wang

Summary: In this paper, the authors compare different intersection control types, including two-way stop control, signalized intersection, roundabout, and signalized roundabout, based on capacity and delay. The results show that signalized roundabout outperforms other control types in both capacity and delay at higher demand levels. It was also found that using both roundabout and signalized roundabout together can significantly reduce delay when there is fluctuation in demand.

Expressway rear-end crash risk evolution mechanism analysis under different traffic states

Ling Wang, Lingjie Zou, Mohamed Abdel-Aty, Wanjing Ma

Summary: This study investigated the crash mechanisms in different traffic states using high-resolution trajectory data. The results showed that crash risk is mainly determined by upstream contributing factors under smooth states, and by downstream factors under congestion conditions.

Investigating the increasing demand and formal regulation of motorcycle taxis in Ghana

Philip Kofi Alimo, Abdul Basit Abdul Rahim, George Lartey-Young, Daniel Ehebrecht, Ling Wang, Wanjing Ma

Summary: The demand for motorcycle taxis has increased significantly in Ghana in the last decade. The lack of research data from users' perspectives makes it difficult to formulate effective policies. This study surveyed 1489 motorcycle taxi users and found that the majority support formal regulation and intend to continue using the service. Users' geographical location, occupation, and perceived safety are significantly associated with their intentions to continue using motorcycle taxis.

Route flow estimation based on the fusion of probe vehicle trajectory and automated vehicle identification data

Wanjing Ma, Jian Yuan, Kun An, Chunhui Yu

Summary: This study proposes a route flow estimation framework by fusing probe vehicle trajectory and automated vehicle identification (AVI) data. The model uses the concept of probe vehicle route penetration rate (RPR) to construct a novel data-driven objective function. Numerical studies show that the proposed model outperforms traditional path flow estimation model, especially when prior flow information is not available.

Wanjing Ma, Philip Kofi Alimo, Ling Wang, Mohamed Abdel-Aty

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive overview of the progress and publication trends in pedestrian safety analysis through a scientometric analysis of research indexed in the Web of Science. The findings reveal the low research productivity from low and middle-income countries compared to their high incidence of pedestrian deaths. It also identifies four keyword clusters to guide future research work.

Is public bike-sharing feasible in Ghana? Road users? perceptions and policy interventions

Philip Kofi Alimo, Stephen Agyeman, Ali Danesh, Chunhui Yu, Wanjing Ma

Summary: Public bike-sharing is not widely adopted in sub-Saharan Africa, with only five countries implementing it. The lack of data makes planning and implementation difficult. This study investigates road users' perceptions of a proposed novel bike-sharing scheme in Ghana and finds that users are interested in adopting future schemes, but it depends on cycling infrastructure and policies. Age, education, and bike ownership significantly affect intentions to adopt. This highlights the need for a national cycling policy framework and enhanced transport infrastructure in Ghana.

Summary: Model-based traffic state estimation is used to reproduce traffic flow states at signalized intersections. A Bayesian learning framework is developed to learn unknown variables in the models from observed data. The proposed method shows good performance in estimating traffic flow at signalized intersections.

Using Reinforcement Learning to Handle the Unintended Lateral Attack in the Intelligent Connected Vehicle Environment

Luoyi Huang, Wanjing Ma, Ling Wang, Kun An

Summary: This paper explores the feasibility of using a reinforcement learning method named PPO (Proximal Policy Optimization) to handle unintended lateral attacks in the intelligent connected vehicle environment and keep the vehicle within the ego lane. Speed-curvature tests were conducted based on the Chinese highway design guide, with discrete speed variants of 120 km/h, 100 km/h, and 80 km/h, and different curvatures ranging from 250 m to 1200 m in increments of 50 m. The tests were carried out in the Open.ai CarRacing-v0 simulation environment with an external racing wheel attached to simulate unintended lateral attacks. The simulation results demonstrate that PPO can effectively handle unintended lateral attacks on standard-designed highways in China, providing potential application in future mass-produced intelligent connected vehicles.

Dynamic vehicle routing problem for flexible buses considering stochastic requests*

Wanjing Ma, Lin Zeng, Kun An

Summary: Flexible buses provide on-demand services based on real-time passenger demand in a cost-effective manner. This study addresses the dynamic bus-routing problem considering stochastic future passenger demand. A two-stage stochastic programming model is formulated to minimize travel time cost and penalty for rejecting requests. The proposed VSC-ALNS algorithm clusters vehicles and passengers based on vector similarity and generates vehicle routes using adaptive large neighbourhood search algorithm.
