Summary: A cohort study showed that catheter diameter is related to the development of deep vein thrombosis. It was found that using smaller diameter catheters can reduce the risk of thrombosis, and both the size model and the catheter-to-vein ratio model have similar accuracy in predicting thrombosis.

Summary: The study found that physical examination has poor accuracy in detecting CADVT in critically ill children, but combining it with imaging can help understand the clinical significance of asymptomatic CADVT. The method of point-of-care ultrasound and the insertion site of CVC may affect the detection results.

Summary: This study examined central venous catheter-related venous thrombotic events in children using the Italian Registry of Pediatric Thrombosis. The results showed that CVC-VTEs are common in children, occurring mainly in non-cardiac sites and younger children. Doppler ultrasound was the most commonly used diagnostic technique and anticoagulant therapy was the standard treatment. The findings of this study contribute to improving the detection and management of this complication.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the most optimal central venous catheter (CVC) for pediatric patients with Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) in terms of complications. The findings suggest that TIVAP is more suitable for pediatric patients with HL compared to PICC, as it reduces complications and early removal.

Summary: Non-catheter related arterial thromboembolism in neonates is rare and carries a significant risk of organ damage or limb loss. Thrombolysis can be used for limb or life-threatening thrombosis, but caution is needed in premature neonates due to bleeding risk. In this case, a premature infant received thrombolysis with low dose recombinant TPA via an umbilical artery catheter, resulting in complete resolution of the thrombus without significant bleeding. Further research is needed to determine the appropriate patient population for catheter-directed thrombolytic therapy and the optimal monitoring approach.

Summary: The study provides evidence on the efficacy and safety of early prophylaxis for central venous catheter-associated deep venous thrombosis in critically ill children. However, issues during the trial led to early termination, highlighting the need for further validation in a pivotal randomized clinical trial.

Summary: This study evaluated the compliance and outcomes of prophylactic enoxaparin treatment in postoperative cardiac children. The results showed that the percentage of catheter-days on enoxaparin increased and the rate of thrombosis decreased after the implementation of the treatment protocol, indicating the effectiveness of prophylactic enoxaparin.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the single-center experience of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in children with severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI) who were mechanically ventilated with a central line, and to identify potentially modifiable risk factors. The results showed that children with DVT had a longer duration of central venous line (CVL) use and a longer duration of mechanical ventilation. However, the use of hypertonic saline (HTS) was not associated with DVT detection in an extremity.

Summary: A systematic review and meta-analysis compared the complications of midline catheters and peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs), focusing on catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) and thrombosis. The results showed that midline catheters were associated with fewer CRBSIs but a higher risk of superficial venous thrombosis compared to PICCs. These findings provide guidance for future cost-benefit analyses and direct comparative trials to better understand the efficacy and risks of midline catheters versus PICCs.

Summary: The study found that perinatal risk factors do not directly affect the severity of encephalopathy in neonates during the first four days of life, but fetal distress during labor and neonatal head circumference above the 10th percentile can impact neurological outcomes. When multiple risk factors are present in neonates, the probability of neurological benefit is lower.

Summary: This study identified deleterious ZNFX1 variants in 15 patients with severe infections by both RNA and DNA viruses and virally triggered inflammatory episodes. ZNFX1 deficiency led to deregulated expression of interferon-stimulated genes and poorer clearance of viral infections, highlighting its crucial role in the immune response to viral infections.

Summary: The study compared therapeutic hypothermia (TH) treatment for term and near-term neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) between different neonatal units. Despite favorable short-term outcomes for the neonates, there were significant variations in baseline perinatal data and TH management among the 10 Swiss units. Areas for improvement in both process and outcome measures were identified for the Swiss units.

Summary: We conducted an observational study in Swiss PICUs to understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study found that patients with PIMS-TS caused a higher workload and different PICUs faced different organizational issues and consequences due to temporary regulations.
