Summary: The systematic review found a high VTE rate following orthopedic surgery for bone or soft tissue sarcoma, with bone sarcoma patients having a higher rate than soft tissue sarcoma patients. The most commonly used chemoprophylaxis was low-molecular-weight heparin, but there was no consensus on the duration or type of thromboprophylaxis used. Future research is needed to determine the most effective thromboprophylaxis regimen in this population.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the preoperative and postoperative risk factors of venous thromboembolism (VTE) after gastrectomy in gastric cancer (GC) patients. Age and tumor stage were found to be independent risk factors for postgastrectomy VTE. Therefore, perioperative monitoring, assessment, and management of risk factors are crucial for better outcomes after gastrectomy.

Summary: A study found that patients with multiple myeloma treated with immunomodulatory therapy still have a high risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), and standard thromboprophylaxis may not be effective enough. Factors including younger age and higher white cell count were found to be predictive of VTE events.

Summary: This study aimed to externally validate the Intermountain Risk Scores for hospital-associated venous thromboembolism (HA-VTE IMRS) and major bleeding (HA-MB IMRS) for VTE and bleeding outcomes. The HA-VTE IMRS had poor discrimination for VTE but the HA-MB IMRS had good discriminatory ability for major bleeding events.

Summary: There is a significant variation in current practices regarding the management and prevention of VTE in pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patients, indicating an urgent need for a multi-center, prospective clinical trial to develop consensus guidelines.

Summary: The incidence of symptomatic VTE in acute COVID-19 hospitalized patients is around 3%, with around 48% of events being diagnosed early. VTE is not associated with death in this population.

Summary: The risk of venous thromboembolism is significantly higher in obese patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty, and the prevalence of obesity in the aging population further increases the postoperative thrombosis risk. There is a lack of clear evidence for dosing recommendations of thromboprophylaxis medications in obese patients, leading to suboptimal dosing regimens and potential bleeding or clotting complications. This review discusses the increased thrombotic risk in obesity, the evidence supporting dosage recommendations, and the implications of current guidelines for obese patients undergoing lower limb arthroplasty.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the rates and risks of VTE during and up to 3 months after medical and surgical hospitalizations. The results showed a significant increase in VTE risk during hospitalization and in the first month after discharge, which then gradually decreased over time.

Summary: This study revealed a high rate of preventable venous thromboembolism, including pulmonary embolism, in patients with ovarian cancer undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Age, body mass index, smoking, and other comorbidities were not significantly associated with the risk of venous thromboembolism. Prospective assessment of thromboprophylaxis during neoadjuvant chemotherapy is needed to prevent these complications.

Summary: This study aimed to develop and validate a specific risk-stratification nomogram model for predicting the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in hospitalized lung cancer patients. The novel model showed better performance in risk stratification compared to existing models, guiding individualized decision-making on thromboprophylaxis.
