The present work is part of a broader research program on the energetics of formation of heterocycles, aiming the study of the enthalpic effects of the introduction of different substituents into heterocycles. In this work we present the results of the thermochemical research on sulphur heterocycles of the type substituted thiophenes with different kind of substituents, mainly alkyl, ester, acetyl, carboxamide, acetamide, carbonitrile and carboxaldehyde. The standard (p (o)=0.1 MPa) molar enthalpies of formation, in the condensed phase, at T=298.15 K, of a large number of substituted thiophenes, were derived from their standard massic energies of combustion, measured by rotating-bomb combustion calorimetry, while the standard molar enthalpies of vaporization or sublimation of those compounds were obtained either by high temperature Calvet Microcalorimetry, or by the temperature dependence of their vapour pressures determined by the Knudsen effusion technique. The standard molar enthalpies of formation, of the studied sulphur heterocycles in the gaseous phase, were then derived. The results are interpreted in terms of structural contributions to the energetics of the substituted thiophenes, the internal consistency of the results is discussed and, whenever appropriate and possible, empirical correlations are suggested for the estimation of standard molar enthalpies of formation, at T=298.15 K, of substituted thiophenes. A Table of enthalpic increments for different group substituents in positions 2 or 3 of the thiophene ring has been established.

Summary: This study used OCTA to analyze retinal capillary closure in eyes of diabetic patients, finding that it can predict the severity of NPDR. A smart combination of different imaging protocols effectively differentiated between mild and moderate-to-severe NPDR.

Characterisation of progression of macular oedema in the initial stages of diabetic retinopathy: a 3-year longitudinal study

Summary: This study characterizes the prevalence and progression of centre-involving diabetic macular oedema (CI-DMO) in minimal to moderate non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy using optical coherence tomography (OCT) and optical reflectivity ratios (OCT-Leakage) measurements of retinal fluid. The results show that subclinical CI-DMO and CI-DMO occur independently of the severity grading of retinopathy and exhibit a progressive increase in retinal extracellular fluid, which is associated with vision loss.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between retinal neurodegenerative changes and vessel closure in individuals with NPDR over a 3-year period. The results show that retinal neurodegenerative changes progress steadily and are directly associated with decreased vessel density, particularly in the deep capillary plexus. These findings suggest a link between retinal neuropathy and microvascular changes in diabetic patients.

Summary: No previous study has been conducted on the parasitofauna of brown bears in the Cantabrian Mountains in Spain. This study aimed to investigate the diversity and prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in this bear population. The results showed a parasite prevalence of 71% with two identified genera: Dicrocoelium sp. and Trichuris sp. Further research efforts are needed to understand the impact of these parasites on bear health and to develop effective management plans for this emblematic species.

Summary: A three-year observational study on individuals with type 2 diabetes found a correlation between retinal vessel closure and the severity progression of diabetic retinopathy. The study showed that retinal vessel density was significantly associated with worsening retinopathy, indicating that OCTA metrics of vessel closure may be used as a surrogate for diabetic retinopathy severity progression. However, no clear correlation was found between neurodegenerative changes and retinopathy progression.
