We have measured the thermal conductivity of the one-dimensional (ID) S = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin system of Sr2Cu1-xPdxO3 single crystals including nonmagnetic impurities of Pd2+. It has been found that the mean free path of spinons along the ID spin chain at low temperatures is very close to the average length of finite spin chains between spin defects estimated from the magnetic susceptibility measurements. This proves that the thermal conduction due to spinons at low temperatures in Sr2CuO3 is ballistic as theoretically expected.

Summary: Novel CdI2-type compounds Pt(Bi(1-x)Ch(x))(2) (Ch = Se, Te) were synthesized, and it was found that the partial substitution of Ch for Bi induces a structural phase transition. The layered structure of Pt(Bi(1-x)Ch(x))(2) is formed by edge-sharing PtBi6 octahedra. Magnetization, electrical resistivity, and specific heat measurements confirmed the emergence of superconductivity at higher temperatures in Pt(Bi1-xSex)(2) and Pt(Bi1-xTex)(2), which are located near the polar-nonpolar structural phase boundary.

Summary: We used extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) to investigate the local structure and local iron magnetic moments of (Li1-xFex)OHFeSe (x ~0.2) superconductors. The local structure, studied by Fe K-edge EXAFS measurements, was found to be inhomogeneous with different Fe-Se bond lengths. The inhomogeneous phase showed peculiar temperature dependence with lattice anomalies at the critical temperature Tc (36 K) and spin density wave (SDW) transition temperature TN (130 K). Additionally, Fe K beta XES showed that iron was in a low spin state with the local Fe magnetic moment evolving anomalously with temperature. The results not only provided quantitative measurement of the local structure of (Li1-xFex)OHFeSe, but also offered further evidence for the vital role of coupled electronic, lattice, and magnetic degrees of freedom in iron-based superconductors.

Summary: Solids undergoing symmetry breaking phase transitions often form domains of low symmetry phases with different sizes and shapes. This article presents an interesting example of a layered dichalcogenide with a triangular lattice, where symmetry breaking of electronic charge/orbital is accompanied by the formation of striped domains and exotic surface states with peculiar spin textures. The study provides insights into the interplay between symmetry breaking, surface electronic structure, and the spin state.
