The Ordos Block has been considered as an Archean micro-block in North China Craton. However, its formation and evolution are poorly understood for a long time due to lack of available basement rocks. Our LA-ICPMS and SIMS zircon U-Pb dating of gneissic granitoids from the Ordos Block basement identified two distinct periods of granitic magmatism at similar to 2.5 Ma and 2.2-2.0 Ga, and two phases of metamorphisms at similar to 1.95 Ga and similar to 1.85 Ga, respectively. Of which most zircons of similar to 2.5 Ga granitoids show positive epsilon(Hf)(t) values ranging from +0.1 to +4.1 with a peak TEN of similar to 2.7 Ga. Minor zircons have negative epsilon(Hf)(t) values from -3.8 to -0.02 and T-Hf(C) of 2.8-3.1 Ga. Moreover, the 3.40 Ga inherited zircon and zircons with T-Hf(C) of 3.1-4.2 Ga were found from 2.2 Ga to 2.0 Ga granitoids. These suggest that there existed a Neoarchean crust in the Ordos Block, which underwent a major crustal growth at similar to 2.7 Ga and granitic magmatism at similar to 2.5 Ga, highly consisting with similar to 2.7 Ga crustal growth and similar to 2.5 Ga magmatism resulted from juvenile crustal reworking in North China Craton. The zircons from 2.2 Ga to 2.0 Ga granitoids in Ordos Block basement display variable Hf isotopic composition of positive to negative epsilon(Hf)(t) values, much similar to those of 22-2.0 Ga granitoids related to continental margin arc setting in the Trans-North China Orogen. They were subsequently subjected to similar to 1.95 and similar to 1.85 Ga metamorphisms, which were widespread throughout the Trans-North China Orogen. Based on the highly coherent zircon geochronology and Hf isotopic composition between Ordos Block and other micro-blocks of North China Craton, we propose that there is a Neoarchean crust in Ordos Block, which underwent a tectonic evolution similar to those in East Block in later Neoarchean, and then experienced 2.2-2.0 Ga granitic magmatism related to continental margin arc and 1.95-1.85 Ga metamorphism resulted from collision between the East and West Blocks along TNCO. Yu Liu, Xian-Hua Li, Paul S. Savage, Guo-Qiang Tang, Qiu-Li Li, Hui-Min Yu, Fang Huang

Summary: This study reports on the Si isotope compositions of four potential reference materials for in-situ Si isotopic microanalysis. The results show that these materials are more homogeneous in Si isotopes compared to the commonly used quartz standard. The study also suggests that synthetic quartz glass can be used as an alternative, more homogeneous standard.

Temporal changes in subduction- to collision-related magmatism in the Neotethyan orogen: The Southeast Iran example

Hadi Shafaii Moghadam, Qiu-Li Li, William L. Griffin, Robert J. Stern, Jose F. Santos, Mihai N. Ducea, Chris J. Ottley, Orhan Karsli, Fatemeh Sepidbar, Suzanne Y. O'Reilly

Summary: Continental-arc igneous rock compositions change in response to the transition from subduction to collision, providing insights into the evolution of crust, lithosphere, and magma sources. The Urumieh-Dokhtar Magmatic Belt (UDMB) in Iran offers a natural laboratory to study these changes. Geochemical and geochronological data reveal different stages of magmatic activity, reflecting the processes of subduction, collision, and crustal thickening. The temporal changes in UDMB magmas are related to the response of the overriding plate to changes in the subduction geometry and collision events.

Zircon Xenocrysts from the Shaka Ridge Record Ancient Continental Crust: New U-Pb Geochronological and Oxygen Isotopic Data

Sergey G. Skublov, Natalia A. Rumyantseva, Qiuli Li, Boris G. Vanshtein, Dmitriy Rezvukhin, Xianhua Li

Summary: In the past two decades, the discovery of ancient zircon xenocrysts in ocean-floor magmatic rocks has provided compelling evidence for the presence of ancient continental crust within young oceanic lithosphere. This report presents the first age determinations and isotope-geochemical data for zircon xenocrysts from gabbro-diorites of the Shaka Ridge. The findings indicate the presence of ancient continental fragments and their recycling into the mantle at the western end of the Southwest Indian Ridge.

Petrochronological Evidence for a Three-Stage Magmatic Evolution of the Youngest Nepheline Syenites from the Ditrau Alkaline Massif, Romania

Urs Kloetzli, Jolanta Burda, Qiu-Li Li, Yu Liu, Gyula Jakab, Lucian Ionescu, Paul Tibuleac

Summary: The study found that the formation history of the Ditrau Alkaline Massif is contradictory to the geochemical evolutionary models and geotectonic environment in the Eastern Carpathian Mountains. By investigating two rock suites, the timing and igneous processes of the massif were determined. The results show that the formation of the Ditrau Alkaline Massif took approximately 13 million years and can be divided into three distinct magmatic events.

Surface evolution during the mid-Proterozoic stalled by mantle warming under Columbia-Rodinia

Yi Zou, Ross N. Mitchell, Xu Chu, Michael Brown, Jilian Jiang, Qiuli Li, Lei Zhao, Mingguo Zhai

Summary: The thermal state of the mantle affects lithospheric dynamics and Earth's surface evolution. Geodynamic simulations suggest that aggregated continents may lead to mantle warming and weaker continental lithosphere, resulting in lower-relief orogens during the mid-Proterozoic period. This weakened lithosphere reduced erosion, limited nutrient delivery to the oceans, hindered oxygen accumulation, and stalled surface evolution.

The Joining of North and South China During the Permian: Coherent Metamorphic Evidence From East Asia Orogenesis

L. Zhao, H. Tang, R. N. Mitchell, Q. L. Li, X. W. Zhou, M. G. Zhai

Summary: The joining of North and South China formed the East Asian continent and the Dabie-Sulu orogenic belt. Determining the time of their initial collision is crucial for understanding the orogenic processes. New dating results suggest a Middle Permian collision, which indicates that continental collisions in East Asia occurred before the end-Permian mass extinction.

Himalayan zircons resurface in Sumatran arc volcanoes through sediment recycling

Meng-Hao Gao, Ping-Ping Liu, Sun-Lin Chung, Qiu-Li Li, Bin Wang, Wei Tian, Xian-Hua Li, Hao-Yang Lee

Summary: Understanding the processes of subducted sediment recycling in subduction zones is crucial for deciphering the interactions between Earth's crust and mantle. This study examines Quaternary arc basalts and andesites from Sumatra Island, Indonesia, using along-arc geochemical variations and zircon U-Pb-Hf-O isotopes to assess the mode of sediment recycling in subduction zones. The findings indicate that some of the volcanic rocks near Toba Caldera derive their composition from subducted terrigenous sediments, which mix with the mantle. Furthermore, thermodynamic modeling suggests that the subducted sediments do not melt on the slab surface, but instead form diapirs that rise buoyantly through the hot mantle wedge and contribute to a significant portion of the magma source.
