Summary: Silicon photonics is a competitive technology for addressing power and speed issues in data centers and computing systems. However, the lack of an on-chip light source limits its widespread applicability. This study demonstrates two compact edge couplers with ultra-low coupling loss, enabling efficient light transmission from a Si-based III-V laser to a Si3N4 waveguide. The achieved ultra-low laser-to-chip coupling loss of only 1.175 dB presents a promising strategy for realizing high-density and large-scale SiPh integration.

Summary: This study reports on the lateral connection of InGaAs/GaAs quantum dot injection microdisk lasers with a bus waveguide using planar technology. Different coupling schemes were studied, and it was found that the coupling with the waveguide resulted in an increase in resonator loss and a decrease in the number of resonance lines. Additionally, efficient light outcoupling was demonstrated for continuous wave operating microdisk lasers at high temperatures.

Summary: This study successfully achieved the seamless integration of III-V nanostructures on silicon and demonstrated the performance of scaled and waveguide coupled III-V photodiodes. Summary: For the first time, direct writing of curved optical waveguides in monocrystalline silicon with curve radii from 2 mm to 6 cm has been demonstrated. Bending loss of the curved waveguides was measured and found to agree well with theoretical values. Raman spectroscopy measurements suggest the formation of inhomogeneous amorphous and polycrystalline phases in the laser-modified region.

Summary: This research demonstrates for the first time the flip-chip integration of a GaSb semiconductor optical amplifier with a silicon photonic circuit, addressing the transition of photonic integration technology towards mid-IR wavelengths. Through wavelength locking and low loss coupling achieved using silicon-on-insulator technology, a promising perspective for the on-chip silicon photonics integration of GaSb gain chips from 1.8 μm to beyond 3 μm is opened up.

Summary: We present a widely wavelength tunable laser (III-V/Si) that covers the entire L-band for optical communication systems. By optimizing the design of the silicon ring filter, we achieve low threshold current and high output power. We fabricate a silicon filter chip using the standard silicon photonic process and package it compactly with a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier. The experimental results demonstrate a large wavelength tuning range, high side-mode suppression ratio, and potential for coherent communications.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel type of waveguides called slot hybrid-core waveguides (HCWs) for temperature-independent integrated optical sensors. The HCWs are composed of different core materials with opposite thermo-optic coefficients (TOCs), which makes them immune to temperature variations. Based on this, slot HCWs are proposed for microring resonator-based optical sensors, enabling the sensors to have high sensitivities and temperature independence simultaneously.

Summary: Optical frequency combs are highly important in applications such as LIDAR and RADAR systems, metrology, telecommunication, and spectroscopy. Integrated mode-locked lasers offer advantages over bulk counterparts in terms of cost, size, and system integration. This study focuses on a III-V/Si3N4 hybrid integrated mode-locked laser for RADAR applications, acting as a frequency bank in the RF domain. The low-loss silicon nitride waveguides enable low noise operation with a very low repetition rate of 364 MHz, providing high precision in RF frequency generation. The study demonstrates passive and harmonic mode locking, along with improved electrical modulation efficiency in the active chip.
