Summary: The study introduces a quantitative differential interference contrast microscopy system that utilizes a liquid crystal shearing assembly, allowing for DIC imaging with arbitrary shearing amount and direction. By compensating for errors using a quarter-wave plate and a mirror, the system demonstrates high practical value in quantitative phase measurement.

Summary: This study utilized a convolutional neural network (CNN) to automatically analyze platelet spreading assays captured by differential interference contrast (DIC) microscopy. Compared to manual analysis, the CNN provided more accurate evaluations of platelet morphology, minimizing biases and variations associated with manual annotation.

Summary: A lock-in method is introduced to enhance the phase contrast in incoherent differential phase contrast (DPC) imaging. By analog removal of the background, this method improves the phase sensitivity. Experimental results show an 8-fold increase in sensitivity and a 70-fold reduction in data collection compared to standard DPC measurements. The method achieves a single-shot sensitivity of 0.7 mrad at a frame rate of 1400 frames per second. This approach opens up possibilities for the use of incoherent phase microscopy in biological applications requiring high phase sensitivity and millisecond response time.

Summary: Due to the increase in plastic waste during the COVID-19 pandemic, concerns about microplastic pollution in water environments are growing. In this study, a differential interference contrast (DIC) system was proposed and demonstrated to detect microplastics in aqueous samples. The results showed that this method enables real-time morphological detection and quantification of microplastics down to 200 nm, improving analysis efficiency and size-detection limit.

Summary: This study investigates the discordance between the adaptive optics (AO) montage center (AMC) and the foveal pit center (FPC) and its implications for cone mosaic analysis. The results show a marked mismatch between the AMC and FPC, which may be modified by diseases such as rod-cone dystrophy. The distance between AMC and FPC is a significant determinant of cone density and inter-cone distance.

Summary: This study presents a novel method for automated quality assessment of fluorescent images captured using smartphone fluorescence microscopes. The method utilizes feature extraction methods to identify and measure multiple features of interest in leukocyte and micro-nanoparticle images. The results show that the method is able to accurately assess the quality of fluorescent images and is highly correlated with manual calculations.

Summary: This study presents an automated approach for characterizing grain morphology in TEM images recorded during ion irradiation. By combining a machine learning model and a computer vision algorithm, comparable results to human analysis can be achieved with significantly reduced analysis time. Researchers can train their own models following the procedures described in this study to automate grain morphology analysis of their own TEM images.

Summary: In this study, the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is applied to tomographic deconvolution phase microscopy (TDPM) to optimize image fidelity by minimizing noise, using total variation regularization, and implementing constraints. ADMM-TDPM achieves speedups in image acquisition and processing times with higher accuracy compared to TDPM.
