Summary: Dry needling does not show significant advantages in short-term relief of headache pain intensity for patients with TTH and CGH, but is more effective in improving related disabilities. Further high-quality studies are needed.

Summary: According to this study, migraine in children and adolescents is more associated with depression, while tension-type headache (TTH) is more associated with anxiety. Therefore, it is important to consider psychological symptoms in the diagnosis and treatment of primary headache disorders.

Summary: Manual therapy and aerobic exercise have significant intervention effects on pain intensity and quality of life in patients with migraines, tension-type headaches, and cervicogenic headaches, while the effects on pain frequency and disability vary.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the effects of non-pharmacological treatments on acute headaches in patients with episodic migraine and tension-type headache. The results showed that neuromodulation, acupuncture, and aerobic exercises were associated with reduced headache symptoms. However, further high-quality studies are needed for more detailed conclusions.

Summary: This study explores the relationship between alcohol consumption and primary headaches. The findings from systematic review and meta-analysis suggest an inverse correlation between alcohol consumption and migraine, while tension-type headache (TTH) is not associated with drinking. The observation that migraine patients avoid alcohol may explain this relationship, rather than alcohol having a protective role against migraine. Further studies with low risk of bias are needed to investigate the relationship between primary headaches and alcohol consumption.

Summary: This study summarized the evidence of static and dynamic balance alterations among patients with headache. Patients with migraine showed greater sway area in static posturography and performed worse in the tandem walk test and limits of stability (LOS) test. However, there was no evidence of altered sway velocity and length in static posturography among patients with migraine. The level of evidence for balance alteration among patients with tension-type and cervicogenic headache was very low due to limited studies and high heterogeneity.

Summary: A systematic review and meta-analysis found that patients with migraine had significantly higher levels of proinflammatory cytokines IL-6, IL-8, TNF-alpha, and IL-1 beta during the ictal phase compared to controls. This suggests that inflammation may play a role in the pathophysiology of migraine. However, further prospective studies are needed to confirm causality and investigate the mechanisms for the increase in cytokine levels identified.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of exercise on pain intensity, medication use, and other factors in patients with migraine and tension-type headache. The results showed that aerobic training had a small to moderate clinical effect on pain intensity and medication use in migraine patients, while strength training had a moderate clinical effect on pain intensity in tension-type headache patients. However, there were limitations in terms of transparency, replicability, and risk of bias in the studies.

Summary: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and characteristics of headaches in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients treated with disease-modifying therapies (DMTs). The study found that more than half of MS patients experienced headaches, with the prevalence of migraines being almost three times higher than tension-type headaches. Migraines in MS patients had high severity and typical migraine characteristics.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the association between body mass index (BMI) and primary headache disorder subtypes. The results showed a significant increased risk of migraine among individuals who were either underweight or obese, while the association between BMI and other subtypes of primary headache disorders remains limited.

Summary: This systematic review examined the association between primary headaches (PHs) and temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) in adults. The study found a positive association between painful TMD and tension-type headache, migraines, and chronic headaches. However, no positive association was found between painless articular TMDs and tension-type headache or migraines. The certainty of evidence for the results varied between very low and low.

Summary: Various treatment modalities have been evaluated for preventative treatment of vestibular migraine, showing improvement in outcome parameters. However, due to significant heterogeneity and lack of standardized reporting, a preferred treatment modality could not be determined. Future randomized controlled trials are needed for more evidence-based treatment.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the differences in total tenderness score between patients with TTH or migraine, and healthy patients, and found that the total tenderness score is higher in patients with TTH or migraine compared to healthy patients. The study concludes that pericranial tenderness is a common finding in patients with headache and highlights the importance of critically evaluating the total tenderness score in the classification of TTH.
