Summary: Microbiota may contribute to the development of various diseases, including cancer. This study aimed to characterize the bladder microbiota in patients with malignant bladder neoplasia and identify potential differences in microbial composition between tumor and non-tumor tissues. The study found significant differences in microbial richness and composition according to tumor grade, as well as higher microbial richness in non-tumor tissues. The presence of specific microbial profiles suggests a protective role for certain microbiota in bladder cancer.

Summary: Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) is a live attenuated strain of Mycobacterium bovis primarily used as a vaccine against tuberculosis. In the past four decades, it has also been utilized for the treatment of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). In patients with NMIBC, BCG decreases the risk of tumor recurrence and progression to more invasive disease by activating both the innate and adaptive arms of the immune system. This article reviews the current data on the mechanism of BCG, as well as the clinical efficacy, recommended indications, and practice for BCG treatment of bladder cancer.
